Bringing Shame Out of the Shadows: Identifying Shame in Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure Processes and Implications for Psychotherapy

Rosaleen McElvaney et al.

Summary: Despite being recognized as a significant contributor to psychological distress following CSA, shame remains a challenging emotion to overcome and is often an inhibitor of disclosure. This study examines shame in the narratives of young people who have experienced CSA, identifying key themes such as languaging shame, avoiding shame, and reducing shame. The findings challenge existing conceptualizations of shame and guilt, particularly when explored in the context of CSA, highlighting the need for nuanced measures of shame in research and therapeutic work.

Gender and Family Relations: Experiences of Highly Educated Eritrean Migrants in the UK

Samson Maekele Tsegay

Summary: Utilizing intersectionality and narrative interviews, this phenomenological study explores the role of gender and family in the socio-cultural integration of highly educated Eritrean migrants in the UK. The research reveals that while migration can empower women economically, it also leads to conflicts within households, hindering gender equality and women's emancipation from patriarchal oppression in the host country. Female participants in the study often face more exclusion and mistreatment compared to men, juggling career and familial responsibilities due to lack of family support and financial constraints.
