Three Facets of Emotion Regulation in Old and Very Old Age: Strategy Use, Effectiveness, and Variability

Ute Kunzmann et al.

Summary: The ability to regulate emotions is crucial for well-being, but little is known about how old and very old adults do so. This study found minimal age differences in emotion regulation strategies during exposure to stressors, but very old individuals used three strategies more intensively compared to young old. The effectiveness of the 10 emotion regulation strategies did not differ across age groups, and between-strategy variability contributed to overall success in emotion regulation. Overall, there were small age differences in emotion regulation, which is noteworthy given the advanced age of the participants and deficits reported in the literature.

More Positive or Less Negative? Emotional Goals and Emotion Regulation Tactics in Adulthood and Old Age

Hannah E. Wolfe et al.

Summary: Despite declines in physical and cognitive functioning, older adults report higher levels of emotional well-being. This study found that older adults tend to rely more on negativity-avoidance tactics in emotion regulation, while younger adults prefer positivity-seeking tactics. This suggests that older adults are more inclined to avoid negative emotions rather than actively seek positive emotions.

What Do We Know About Aging and Emotion Regulation?

Derek M. Isaacowitz

Summary: Despite other age-related declines, older adults report high levels of affective well-being. Current evidence does not provide consistent support for the belief that older adults are better at emotion regulation. Future research should investigate individual trajectories of stability and change in emotion-regulation strategy use and effectiveness, considering context, physiological reactivity, neural changes, acceptance, and personality factors.

Attention-Focused Emotion Regulation in Everyday Life in Adulthood and Old Age

Marissa A. DiGirolamo et al.

Summary: This longitudinal experience sampling study examines age differences in attention deployment tactics and their relationship with mood regulation. The study found that positive attention deployment tactics were the most popular and positively related to affective experience. However, younger adults used positive internal attention focus less frequently compared to other age groups, while older adults used all negative attention deployment tactics less frequently. The onset of COVID-19 led to more negative emotions and increased attention shift tactics, with variations across age groups.

A Dimensional Taxonomy of Perceived Characteristics of Major Life Events

Maike Luhmann et al.

Summary: This study developed a dimensional taxonomy of perceived characteristics of MLEs and found that these characteristics predict individual differences in changes in subjective well-being, beyond established predictors. Including measures of perceived event characteristics in studies may enhance understanding of why MLEs differ in their effects on psychological outcomes.
