Summary: This study focuses on the optimization of a multi-generation system involving an integrated dual-purpose desalination plant and a small-scale absorption refrigeration system. By developing a nonlinear mathematical programming optimization model and considering factors such as electricity generation, freshwater production, refrigeration capacity, and heating load, cost-effective optimal solutions are obtained. The analysis shows the impact of the number of effects in the multi-effect distillation subsystem on the optimal solutions, leading to the development of a cost-effective optimal solution for the studied multi-generation system.
