Formation mechanism and control strategies of yN-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation during ozonation

Yang Song et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the major findings regarding the formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) during ozonation, a highly toxic and carcinogenic disinfection by-product. It evaluates the reaction kinetics, chemical yields, and mechanisms of potential precursors, as well as proposes strategies for controlling NDMA formation through improved ozonation processes.

Removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater of health care facilities

Daniele Mousel et al.

Summary: Health care facilities can be point sources of pharmaceutical residues in public sewer systems. This study found that combining biological treatment with further processes such as activated carbon adsorption, ozonation and advanced oxidation can effectively remove pharmaceutical residues from wastewater in nursing homes, orthopaedic clinics, and psychiatric clinics. The results demonstrate the general suitability of these treatment methods for eliminating pharmaceutical residues, with the advanced oxidation process showing the highest energy demand.

Understanding the influence of pre-ozonation on the formation of disinfection byproducts and cytotoxicity during post-chlorination of natural organic matter: UV absorbance and electron-donating-moiety of molecular weight fractions

Wen-Long Wang et al.

Summary: Pre-ozonation can effectively reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during subsequent chlorination by oxidizing electron-donating-moieties (EDMs) and UVA in natural organic matter, especially in high and medium molecular weight fractions. The study found that pre-ozonation inhibited the formation of representative DBPs, total organic chloride, and cytotoxicity, but may have promoted the formation of carbonyl-DBPs. Additionally, EDM abatement was found to better reflect the formation of total organic chlorine and cytotoxicity, indicating a complex relationship between EDM removal and the speciation of DBPs.

Treatment technologies for emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Prangya R. Rout et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) are unregulated anthropogenic chemicals that persist in the environment and are considered contaminants of emerging environmental concerns. Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

To what extent may pharmaceuticals and pesticides be removed by PAC conventional addition to low-turbidity surface waters and what are the potential bottlenecks?

Margarida Campinas et al.

Summary: Pilot runs of PAC/CFS showed effective removal of 19 pharmaceutical compounds and 9 pesticides, with mesoporous and microporous PAC being the most effective; adsorption of microcontaminants is influenced by charge, hydrophobicity, and aromaticity; selecting the right PAC type and contact time can improve efficiency, reduce dose, and save costs.

Josep Borrull et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and removal of 60 organic micropollutants in a drinking water treatment plant, revealing that granular activated carbon and ozonation are the most efficient removal technologies. Additionally, some compounds were still not effectively removed in the finished drinking water.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) adsorption in drinking water by granular activated carbon: Influence of activated carbon and PFAS characteristics

Beatrice Cantoni et al.

Summary: The persistence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment leads to their presence in drinking water, posing a high concern for human health. Adsorption onto activated carbon (AC) has been identified as an effective technique for PFAS removal. The surface charge of AC was found to be the most important factor affecting adsorption performance, with positively-charged AC showing stronger adsorption capacities. Different types of AC demonstrated varied adsorption effects on different properties of PFAS in full-scale monitoring.

Fluorescence excitation/emission matrices as a tool to monitor the removal of organic micropollutants from wastewater effluents by adsorption onto activated carbon

Ronan Guillossou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy in monitoring the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) by activated carbon (AC) adsorption in industrial scale wastewater treatment. Different operational conditions and physico-chemical properties of OMPs affected the removal efficiency. Positive correlations were found between fluorescence indexes and OMP removal, with higher correlation coefficients compared to UV254, indicating the promising application of fluorescence spectroscopy.

Caffeine removal from aqueous media by adsorption: An overview of adsorbents evolution and the kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies

Suyanne Angie Lunelli Bachmann et al.

Summary: This paper provides a systematic review of caffeine removal by the adsorption process, showing that adsorption is the preferred method for caffeine removal with capacities ranging between 10 and 1000 mg g(-1), and the pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm models are the best for fitting experimental data. Future research should focus on mechanistic understanding of adsorption, development of new adsorbents, and consideration of other kinetic models and thermodynamic studies.

Ana M. Gorito et al.

Summary: Ozone-based water treatments proved to be effective in simultaneously removing organic micropollutants and bacteria from surface water samples. Single ozonation was found to be the best treatment solution with removal efficiencies higher than 85% for most OMPs, as well as achieving microbial inactivation to levels below permissible levels for drinking water.

Deep-bed filters as post-treatment for ozonation in tertiary municipal wastewater treatment: impact of design and operation on treatment goals

Daniel Sauter et al.

Summary: Ozonation followed by biological post-treatment is an effective technology for removing organic micropollutants from municipal wastewater. The use of biological activated carbon (BAC) filters can enhance removal efficiency, while controlling the contact time can further optimize the process. In addition, the integration of enhanced phosphorus removal into post-treatment with relatively low efforts is feasible through the use of inline coagulant dosing.
