Divergent responses of deep SOC sequestration to large-scale revegetation on China's Loess Plateau

Shaofei Wang et al.

Summary: Dryland revegetation can mitigate land degradation and increase vegetation coverage and carbon sinks, but it may also decrease soil water storage. This study investigated the impact of different vegetation types and precipitation on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and soil water storage (SWS) in deep soils. The results showed that woodland had the highest SOC sequestration efficiency but also caused the most severe soil water deficit, while shrubland had lower water deficit and higher SOC sequestration effect than grassland. These findings provide insights into the potential of dryland revegetation and can guide vegetation restoration efforts in different regions.

Comparative assessment of environmental impacts, mitigation potentials, and economic benefits of rain-fed and irrigated apple production systems on China's Loess Plateau

Zhenxing Zhang et al.

Summary: Although China's apple industry heavily relies on excessive fertilizer-water-pesticide inputs, little is known about the environmental impacts and mitigation potential of apple production systems in China. This study used life cycle assessment to evaluate the risks and potential benefits of irrigated and rain-fed apple orchards on the Loess Plateau. The results showed that optimized management of inputs can significantly mitigate environmental impacts and increase economic benefits. Overall, integrated soil-crop-market management can efficiently develop high-quality apple production.

High nutrients surplus led to deep soil nitrate accumulation and acidification after cropland conversion to apple orchards on the Loess Plateau, China

Min Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the causes and environmental problems of deep soil nitrate accumulation in apple orchards on the Loess Plateau. The main cause was identified as overfertilization. The study recommends multiple fertilizations, reasonable ratios of chemical and organic fertilizer, and scientific fertilization guidance to balance economic benefits and environmental protection.

The efficiency of organic C sequestration in deep soils is enhanced by drier climates

Shaofei Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing precipitation promotes organic C sequestration in deep soils, and apple orchards have a greater capacity for SOC sequestration compared to arable lands. The SOC sequestration in deep soils for MAP = 422 mm was almost twice as great as that for MAP = 606 mm. Additionally, lower precipitation leads to higher efficiency of SOC sequestration in deep soils.

Response of the vertical distribution of soil water and nitrogen in the 5 m soil layer to the conversion of cropland to apple orchards in the Loess Plateau, China

Mingyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of converting cropland to apple orchards on soil water and nitrogen distributions in the Loess Plateau. The results showed that there were severe soil water deficits and high nitrate accumulation in apple orchards, especially in older orchards. The soil water deficits and nitrate accumulation in abandoned apple orchards can persist for ten years. It is important to apply a reasonable amount of fertilizer in orchards to reduce contaminants in the soil environment.

Effects of Organic Acid Root Exudates of Malus hupehensis Rehd. Derived from Soil and Root Leaching Liquor from Orchards with Apple Replant Disease

Nan Sun et al.

Summary: Organic acids secreted by plants can inhibit seed germination and root growth. The concentration of root and soil leaching liquor has significant effects on plant growth and chlorophyll synthesis, with low concentrations promoting growth and high concentrations inhibiting growth. The activities of certain enzymes were not significantly affected by low concentrations of soil leaching liquor. Different leaching liquor treatments also affected the secretion of phenolic acids.

Assessing the response of orchard productivity to soil water depletion using field sampling and modeling methods

Yuanhong Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil water deficit in apple orchards is a common phenomenon related to land degradation on the Loess Plateau. This study used field sampling and modeling to understand the impact of apple orchards on soil water availability and changes in orchard productivity. The findings suggest that appropriate management measures based on precipitation and soil water conditions can minimize the detrimental effects of soil water depletion.

Variations and influencing factors of nitrate accumulation in the deep soil profiles of apple orchards on the Loess Plateau

Xueqiang Zhu et al.

Summary: Nitrate accumulation in the soil profile is an important fate of surplus nitrogen fertilizer in intensive agricultural regions. This study investigated the characteristics of nitrate accumulation in deep soil profiles and identified key driving factors. The results showed that nitrate accumulation characteristics were positively correlated with orchard standing ages. Water input rate and soil sand content were key controlling factors for nitrate accumulation depth, while stand age and N fertilization rate mainly controlled nitrate content and accumulation amount. The southern apple-planting region was found to be a nitrate vulnerable zone.

Conversion from farmland to orchards has minor effects on nitrogen biological processes in deep loess deposits

Wangjia Ji et al.

Summary: High nitrate accumulation in vadose zones due to overuse of synthetic fertilizers has a significant impact on nitrogen biological processes. This study investigated the effects of land use conversion from farmlands to deep-rooted apple orchards on these processes. The results showed that despite excessive fertilizer application and well-developed root systems, the deep-rooted orchards had minor effects on N sources and biological processes in deep loess deposits.

Effects of slope morphology and position on soil nutrients after deforestation in the hilly loess region of China

Qingyin Zhang et al.

Summary: Deforestation can lead to severe losses of soil nutrients, but the impacts of slope morphology and position on the spatial distributions of soil nutrients after deforestation are not well understood. This study in the hilly Loess Plateau region of China found that slope morphology and position significantly influenced the distributions of soil nutrients, highlighting their importance in predicting soil nutrient responses to deforestation.
