Reason for the increased electroactivity of extracellular polymeric substances with electrical stimulation: Structural change of α-helix peptide of protein

Zhihao Jiang et al.

Summary: The electroactivity of microbial sludge can be enhanced by electrical stimulation, but the mechanism behind this is unclear. In this study, three microbial electrolysis cells showed an increase in current generation by 1.27-1.76 times after 49 days of electrical stimulation, but typical electroactive microorganisms were not enriched. The capacitance and conductivity of sludge EPS also increased by 1.32-1.83 times and 1.27-1.32 times, respectively, after electrical stimulation. In-situ FTIR analysis suggested that electrical stimulation can polarize amide groups in proteins, affecting the protein structure related to electroactivity.

Ubiquitous occurrence and functional dominance of comammox Nitrospira in full-scale wastewater treatment plants

Maosheng Zheng et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) bacteria has challenged the traditional understanding of nitrification. However, their importance in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is still not well understood. This study found that comammox Nitrospira was present in all 25 WWTPs and even outnumbered other ammonia oxidizers. It was also confirmed that comammox Nitrospira actively participated in ammonia oxidation. These findings demonstrate the widespread occurrence and functional dominance of comammox in WWTPs.

Metagenomic analysis reveals the responses of microbial communities and nitrogen metabolic pathways to polystyrene micro(nano)plastics in activated sludge systems

Shuchang Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of polystyrene microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on microbiomes and functional genes in activated sludge systems were investigated. The results showed that low concentrations (1 mg/L) of MPs and NPs had minimal impacts on nitrogen removal performance, while high concentrations (20 and 100 mg/L) decreased total nitrogen removal efficiency. The presence of MPs and NPs induced cytotoxicity and reduced the abundance of denitrifiers and functional genes involved in nitrogen transformation processes, resulting in decreased nitrogen removal efficiency. This study provides important insights into the response of microbial communities and nitrogen conversion processes to micro(nano)plastic disturbance in activated sludge systems.
