Summary: Studying the regulatory mechanisms of nitrogen-use efficiency in crops is crucial for sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. In this study, a high-quality genome assembly was generated for a high NUE wheat cultivar, and genes related to nitrogen uptake and metabolism were analyzed. Comparative analyses revealed that the high-affinity nitrate transporter gene family had expanded in Triticeae, with functional differentiation providing a genetic basis for improving wheat adaptability to nitrogen deficiency. Transcriptome data showed that the high NUE cultivar exhibited higher nitrogen absorption and tolerance to deficiency, particularly at the reproductive stage. This high NUE trait is controlled at different levels, offering new insights into improving wheat cultivars with enhanced NUE.

Insights into nitrogen metabolism in the wild and cultivated lettuce as revealed by transcriptome and weighted gene co-expression network analysis
