Experimental investigation and design of slip resistant aluminium alloy-stainless steel connections

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation into the structural response and slip resistance of aluminium alloy-stainless steel connections fastened by means of high-strength stainless steel swage-locking pins. Thirty-seven friction tests on aluminium alloy-stainless steel shear connections with different surface treatments and material grades were conducted. The failure modes, load-slip responses, friction coefficients, and preloading behavior of all specimens were fully reported. The suitability of various surface treatments for aluminium alloy-stainless steel connections was evaluated, and design slip factors and correction coefficients were set out to account for different material grades and preload levels.

Fatigue failure mechanism of aluminium alloy riveted single-shear lap joints

He Wang et al.

Summary: The fatigue life, damage evolution process, and fatigue fracture behaviour of an aluminium alloy single shear lap joint riveted by a swage-locking pin were studied through a fatigue test. Various equipment, including optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, electron probe microanalyzer, and three-dimensional white light interferometry, were used to study the characteristics and area of debris at the interface of the lap-plate under different cycles. Two fatigue failure modes of the joint were observed under different fatigue loads. Micro-cracks were generated in the contact area under fretting wear, with the highest maximum principal stress at the crack source.

Performance of Q690 high-strength steel T-stub under monotonic and cyclic loading

Zhenming Chen et al.

Summary: Through testing eleven specimens and performing numerical analysis, the performance of a Q690 T-stub was investigated. The results indicate that the EC3 approach can accurately predict the design plastic resistance of the T-stub. The T-stub shows improved ductility under monotonic loading, and increasing bolt diameter and material grade is beneficial. A larger bolt spacing leads to higher ductility coefficient and energy dissipation. Additionally, increasing flange thickness aids in energy dissipation, and the effect of bolt material grade becomes more significant with increasing flange thickness.

Fatigue behaviour analysis of aluminium alloy riveted single-shear lap joints

He Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively describes the fatigue failure process of aluminium alloy riveted single-shear lap joints by analyzing the dynamic response. Firstly, a numerical analysis method based on MATLAB is proposed to calculate the cyclic relative displacement amplitude, stiffness, and dissipated energy. Secondly, the service behavior corresponding to the evolution of relative displacement amplitude and dissipated energy is analyzed and verified through finite element simulation. Finally, the cycles corresponding to crack initiation, slow and rapid propagation are calculated and verified by observing crack growth propagation through interruption tests based on the evolution of cyclic compression stiffness.

Study on the Design Method of Ring Groove Rivet Joint in Aluminum Alloy Structure

Jianpeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper studies the influence of end distance and edge distance on the failure mode, load-displacement curve, and other mechanical properties of high strength aluminum alloy ring groove rivet nodes. Finite element models are established and analyzed using ABAQUS software. The results show that the high-strength aluminum alloy ring-groove rivet connection is a pressure-bearing connection with good ductility. The failure forms include rivet shear failure, plate cross-section tearing, and longitudinal section tearing. Recommended values for edge distance and end distance are provided. The research also analyzes the shear and compressive bearing capacity of rivets under different connection modes and derives correction formulas for domestic high-strength aluminum alloy rivets.

Ultimate behaviour of bolted T-stubs under large displacements: A mechanical model

Antonella B. Francavilla et al.

Summary: A novel mechanical model based on a step-by-step integration algorithm is proposed to accurately predict the response of bolted T-stubs. The model considers complexities occurring in the large displacement range and accurately predicts T-stubs' resistance and ultimate displacement capacity.

Experimental study of swage-locking pinned aluminium alloy shear connections

Zhongxing Wang et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the structural behavior and strength of swage-locking pinned aluminum alloy double-shear connections. It finds that current design provisions provide overly conservative strength predictions for this type of connection, with room for improvement in more efficient design equations.
