Productiveness and Berry Quality of New Wine Grape Genotypes Grown under Drought Conditions in a Semi-Arid Wine-Producing Mediterranean Region

Diego Jose Fernandez-Lopez et al.

Summary: One alternative for adapting viticulture to high temperatures and the scarcity of water is the development of new grape varieties adapted to such conditions. This study describes the evaluation of six new genotypes derived from different crosses under deficit irrigation and rainfed conditions. The results show significant variation in productivity, phenolic content, and other parameters among the different genotypes, with two genotypes showing noteworthy performance under rainfed conditions and potential for sustainable high-quality viticulture in dry and hot areas.

Biochemical methane potential of three-phase olive mill solid waste: Influence of temperature and supplemental enzymes

Rafat Al Afif et al.

Summary: The methane potential of three-phase olive mill solid waste (3POMSW) was evaluated, and thermophilic processing was found to result in higher methane and biogas yield. The addition of enzyme mixtures showed potential for increasing methane production. Simple model equations were developed for calculating biogas yield and optimizing the process.

Bacterial community dynamics varies with soil management and irrigation practices in grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.)

Stefanie N. Vink et al.

Summary: Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between different grapevine cultivars at different plant phenological stages and soil bacterial communities. We found that soil bacterial communities were primarily associated with cultivar and location, influenced by environmental variables such as soil physicochemical properties, and importantly, that these factors had an interactive effect.

Responses to Drought Stress Modulate the Susceptibility to Plasmopara viticola in Vitis vinifera Self-Rooted Cuttings

Lisa Heyman et al.

Summary: This research investigates how grapevine responds to the concurrent challenge of drought stress and Plasmopara viticola, and how one stress affects the other. The study shows that drought can increase the susceptibility of grapevine leaves to pathogen infection, but both drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive cultivars exhibit resistance against the pathogen when inoculated in planta. Abscisic acid seems to play a prominent role in this resistance process. The findings suggest that irrigation practices to mitigate climate change effects may have a significant impact on plant pathogens.

More than Just Wine: The Nutritional Benefits of Grapevine Leaves

Marisa Maia et al.

Summary: Domesticated species of Vitis vinifera L. have been widely used for human consumption, with their leaves also serving as a source of bioactive compounds in diets of Mediterranean countries. Elemental, fatty acid and pigment profiling of seven different cultivars revealed varied nutritional quality and health-promoting properties.
