Unintended environmental consequences of place-based economic policies

Summary: This study examines the environmental consequences of two regional economic development policies in the Upper Pearl River regions of Guangdong Province, China. The research reveals that these policies have led to higher growth rates in industries with high water pollution compared to industries with less water pollution. The second policy, which includes environmental regulations, has been effective in restricting the entry of new firms in high-pollution industries, but has failed to remove existing high-pollution firms from the region.

Evaluation of typical ecosystem services in Dabie Mountain area and its application in improving residents' well-being

Summary: Using Jinzhai County in the core area of Dabie Mountains, China as an example, this research discusses the spatiotemporal evolution, spatial heterogeneity, and coupling association patterns of ecosystem services and multidimensional well-being from 2005 to 2020. The results show an upward trend in food supply, soil retention, and water yield, while carbon sequestration and biodiversity maintenance showed a downward trend. The comprehensive index of multidimensional well-being increased by 27.23% and the spatial difference in well-being narrowed. The research provides reference for improving the synergy between ecosystem services and poverty alleviation in the Dabie Mountain area.

The impact of science and technology services on agricultural income of rural household: An investigation based on the three northeastern provinces of China

Summary: Science and technology services (STS) are crucial for sustainable agricultural development and raising rural households' income. This study examines the impact of STS on rural household income in poor rural counties in China. The results show that STS has a positive effect on income, with different subdimensions of STS playing a role. These effects are more pronounced among specific groups, such as young, male and highly educated householders, and those who have received STS for longer periods or adopted green production techniques. The findings highlight the importance of improving the effectiveness of STS for disadvantaged groups.

A review of the balance of regional development in China from the perspective of development geography

Conceptualisations of wellbeing and quality of life: A systematic review of participatory studies

Summary: There is a growing movement worldwide to utilize wellbeing measures more effectively in policy-making. This is driven by the recognition that economic indicators alone may not adequately capture the aspects of life that are valued by individuals. Participatory wellbeing frameworks, created through collaboration with the relevant population and asking them what wellbeing means to them, have been found to be valuable. However, there is currently limited understanding of the work conducted in this area. This systematic review aims to fill this gap by identifying 130 participatory wellbeing studies from around the world and analyzing their methods and findings.

Research on the Impact of Farmland Transfer on Rural Household Consumption: Evidence from Yunnan Province, China

Demystifying the geography of income inequality in rural China: A transitional framework

Summary: This paper detects the uneven distribution of regional inequality in rural China and analyzes the factors and mechanisms behind it using a four-dimensional transitional framework. The study finds that rural inequalities are clustered at the province level and tend to be geographically gathered in the most unequal regions. The spatio-temporal disparity in rural inequality is found to be deeply embedded in the quadruple-transition process of marketization, globalization, decentralization, and urbanization. The study also reveals that the influences of the transition processes vary across regions and study periods. The key role of human investment in reducing rural inequality in eastern provinces is emphasized, as well as the importance of formulating policies in accordance with regional characteristics.

Trade policy uncertainty, development strategy, and export behavior: Evidence from listed industrial companies in China

Does broadband infrastructure really affect consumption of rural households? - A quasi-natural experiment evidence from China

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of broadband infrastructure construction on rural household consumption using an exogenous policy shock introduced by the China's “Broadband Countryside” pilot project. The findings show that broadband construction significantly increased rural household consumption, mainly through mobile phone access to the Internet, while the penetration of computers crowds out consumption. Further research found that broadband construction has increased rural household consumption related to daily life and high-quality household consumption, but has not promoted consumption upgrades for rural households.

The Impact of Rising Housing Rent on Residents' Consumption and Its Underlying Mechanism: Empirical Evidence from China

Summary: The research findings indicate that a rise in housing rent causes a wealth effect on residents' consumption at the national level across all regions. The upgrading of the industrial structure plays a positive role in strengthening the wealth effect of rising housing rent on residents' consumption. Housing rent increase positively affects residents' daily necessities and services consumption, transportation and telecommunication consumption, education, culture, and entertainment consumption, and habitation consumption, while negatively affecting food, tobacco, and alcohol consumption, clothing consumption, and other supplies and services consumption. However, the impact on health care consumption is not significant.
