The net and combined effects of minimum tillage and straw mulching on carbon accumulation in global croplands

Liangang Xiao et al.

Summary: This study finds that straw mulching has a greater impact on improving soil quality and promoting soil organic carbon accumulation, especially in deeper soil layers. The combined use of straw mulching and minimum tillage can effectively increase soil organic carbon storage. Proper minimum tillage practices can further enhance carbon sequestration, especially under specific climatic conditions. Therefore, in the context of global climate change, further research and improvement of minimum tillage techniques are crucial for sustainable development.

Effects of long-term grazing exclusion on plant and soil properties vary with position in dune systems in the Horqin Sandy Land

Renhui Miao et al.

Summary: Grazing exclusion is an important policy in China for recovering degraded grasslands, but its effects on sand dune ecosystems vary by topographic location. Long-term grazing exclusion leads to increased plant density, cover, species richness, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen across different areas in sand dune systems.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Size-selective exclusion of mammals and invertebrates differently affects grassland plant communities depending on vegetation type

Xiaowei Wang et al.

Summary: This study showed that different-sized animals play an important role in maintaining plant community structure in short-grass vegetation, highlighting the significance of various animal groups for ecosystem functioning. However, there was no evidence of top-down control by animals in tall-grass vegetation, suggesting that potential defaunation effects on grassland plant community structure depend on grazing pressure and vegetation type.

Climate warming from managed grasslands cancels the cooling effect of carbon sinks in sparsely grazed and natural grasslands

Jinfeng Chang et al.

Summary: This study examines the global trends and regional patterns of grassland greenhouse gas balance from 1750 to 2012. It found that human management activities have caused grasslands to switch from a sink to a source of greenhouse gases, while climate change drivers contributed to a net carbon sink in soil organic matter. The net radiative forcing of all grasslands is currently close to neutral, but has been increasing since the 1960s.

Impact of soil degradation on plant communities in an overgrazed Tibetan alpine meadow

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of overgrazing on soil properties and plant succession in the alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Changes in soil properties, particularly soil pH and bulk density, play a significant role in influencing plant community structure and composition with grassland degradation. Future research should focus on key species and soil properties in degraded grasslands.

Grassland-to-cropland conversion increased soil, nutrient, and carbon losses in the US Midwest between 2008 and 2016

Xuesong Zhang et al.

Summary: The conversion of grassland to cropland in the US Midwest has led to increased soil erosion, nitrogen loss, and organic carbon loss, impacting soil quality, air, and water. Additional conservation measures may be necessary, especially in regions with high conversion rates.

Root, not aboveground litter, controls soil carbon storage under grazing exclusion across grasslands worldwide

Jishuai Su et al.

Summary: Grazing exclusion is an effective management strategy for improving grasslands degraded by overgrazing, as it enhances plant production and soil carbon storage globally. The effects of grazing exclusion on litter production and soil carbon storage are influenced by herbivore body size, climate conditions, and duration of exclusion. The increase in aboveground litter biomass induced by grazing exclusion is mainly attributed to the increase in graminoid biomass, and the enhancement of soil carbon storage is possibly due to the response of root biomass along a precipitation gradient.
