New Early Neoproterozoic Paleomagnetic Constraints of the Northwestern China Blocks on the Periphery of Rodinia

Yan Xu et al.

Summary: Recent studies focus on debates surrounding the involvement of northwestern China blocks, specifically the north Tarim block, south Tarim block (STB), Altyn Tagh block (ATB), and Qaidam-Qilian block (QQB), in the assembly of Rodinia. In this study, a combined paleomagnetic, geochronological, and geochemical investigation was conducted on 16 mafic dikes in the northern ATB. Three characteristic remanent magnetization components (CHs) were identified after removing recent viscous remanent magnetization. CH1, found in NW-trending diabase dikes, yielded a mean direction of 123.3°/-42.2° and a calculated paleopole of 40.9°S/184.6°E. CH2 and CH3 were isolated from E-W trending diabase dikes and lamprophyre dikes, respectively. However, precise mean poles could not be determined for CH2 or CH3 due to insufficient VGPs. Geochemical analyses also revealed petrogenetic discrepancies among the dikes with different CHs. Combining the new ~895 Ma pole of CH1 with the global paleomagnetic database and geological evidence, it is suggested that the STB-ATB-QQB and the north China craton were located northwest of Laurentia in Rodinia around ~895 Ma.

Late Paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution of the northern Tarim Craton, NW China: Insights from phase equilibrium modeling and zircon U-Pb geochronology of metapelitic granulite in the Kuluketage area

Yu Guo et al.

Summary: The global paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution plays an important role in understanding the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. This study focuses on the northern Tarim region and reveals a paleoproterozoic tectono-thermal event related to the Columbia supercontinent assembly. However, the limited metamorphic investigations hindered the recognition of paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution in the northern Tarim, impacting the understanding of the relationship between Tarim Craton and the Columbia supercontinent. The study conducted petrography, zircon U-Pb geochronology, and phase equilibria modeling to analyze metapelitic granulite samples from the Xingditage Group. The results provide insights into the paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution in the northern Tarim Craton and propose a tectonic evolution scenario involving a collision with an unknown block prior to approximately 1.85 Ga.

Depositional environment and genesis of the Paleoproterozoic Astingbulake banded iron formations from the Quruqtagh Block, northeast Tarim Craton

Ru-Xiong Lei et al.

Summary: Banded iron formations (BIFs) are commonly found marine chemical sedimentary rocks in Precambrian cratons worldwide. This study focuses on the poorly-studied Astingbulake BIF in the Quruqtagh Block, north Tarim, and presents new petrographic, bulk rock geochemical, and Sm-Nd isotopic data. The Astingbulake BIF is a chemical sediment with layered magnetite-and quartz-rich bands, and it shows contributions from hydrothermal fluids and older continental flux.

Geochronology and geochemistry of gneiss and migmatite from the Korla Complex in the Quruqtagh block, NW China: Implications for Proterozoic crustal evolution of the northeastern Tarim Craton

Xiao-Hui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Korla Complex in the Tarim Craton and reveals Proterozoic tectono-thermal events. The results show that the assembly of the Tarim Craton to the Columbia supercontinent lasted until ca. 0.81 Ga, indicating its involvement in the global tectonic evolution during the Columbia-Rodinia supercontinent cycle.

Composition and evolution of the continental crust: Retrospect and prospect

J. L. R. Touret et al.

Summary: Until the middle of the 20th century, it was believed that the continental crust was predominantly composed of granite. However, studies after the Second World War revealed that the continental crust is mainly made up of metamorphic rocks. Different types of rocks are distributed in different regions of the crust, formed during metamorphic events associated with mantle upwelling. The formation of the crust occurred prior to the disruption of supercontinents, with the lower crust experiencing ultrahigh temperature metamorphism. Heat is provided by mantle-derived magmas and mantle fluids.

Early Neoproterozoic (870-820 Ma) amalgamation of the Tarim craton (northwestern China) and the final assembly of Rodinia

Pan Zhao et al.

Summary: Research on the paleogeographic configuration of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia suggests that the Tarim craton in northwestern China had a -28 degrees latitudinal difference with the South Tarim block around 900 Ma, and the amalgamation of the Tarim craton is estimated to have occurred between 870 and 820 Ma. The study supports a two-stage orogenic model for the assembly of Rodinia.
