Correlation between Antimicrobial Resistance and the Hospital-Wide Diverse Use of Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics by the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in Japan

Takashi Ueda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between antibiotic diversity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Gram-negative organisms. The findings suggest that antibiotic heterogeneity is negatively associated with the development of antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Short versus long course of colistin treatment for carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii in critically ill patients: A propensity score matching study

Wasan Katip et al.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of short duration (< 14 days) versus long duration (& GE; 14 days) colistin therapy in critically ill patients with CRAB infection. The results showed that the long-course therapy group had a lower 30-day mortality rate, better clinical and microbiological responses, but similar nephrotoxicity compared to the short-course therapy group.

Yu-Lin Lee et al.

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) pose a growing threat to public health. This study analyzed data from multiple regions worldwide and found a high prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP), with significant variations in resistance patterns and associated genes between countries.

Economic burden of antibiotic resistance in China: a national level estimate for inpatients

Xuemei Zhen et al.

Summary: This study estimated the economic costs of AR in inpatients in China, finding that patients with MDR infections caused by various bacteria experienced higher individual patient costs, longer hospital stays, and higher in-hospital mortality rates. The study estimated that the societal economic burden attributed to AR was $77 billion in 2017, equivalent to 0.37% of China's yearly gross domestic product, with $57 billion associated with MDR.
