Polycobaltoceniumylmethylene - A Water-Soluble Polyelectrolyte Prepared by Ring-Opening Transmetalation Polymerization

Aylin Feuerstein et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a water-soluble polycobaltoceniumylmethylene chloride (PCM-Cl) via ring-opening transmetalation polymerization is described. The resulting polymer contains methylene-bridged cobaltocenium moieties within its main-chain. Characterization of the polymer was carried out using various techniques, including NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, TGA, DSC, XRD, CV, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The ion-dependent solubility of the polymer was also demonstrated, allowing for the tuning of its hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties.

Summary: Molecular recognition and supramolecular assembly are important areas of non-covalent phenomena. This study introduces a simple and versatile strategy to extend electron catalysis, widely used in synthetic covalent chemistry, into the field of supramolecular non-covalent chemistry. It demonstrates that the formation of a specific molecular complex can be accelerated and controlled by the addition of catalytic amounts of a chemical electron source.

Ionization of Decamethylmanganocene: Insights from the DFT-Assisted Laser Spectroscopy

Sergey Ketkov et al.

Summary: Metallocenes, an important class of organometallics, show promising practical applications in various fields. In this study, we investigated the changes in the molecular and electronic structure of decamethylmanganocene upon ionization. The ionization energy was determined, and it was found that the detachment of an electron led to structural deformations and charge redistribution involving hydrogen atoms of the substituents and carbon atoms of the molecule.

A redox-switchable catalyst with an 'unplugged' redox tag

Cristian L. Gutierrez-Pena et al.

Summary: Two bis-(propyl-imidazolium)-napthalenediimide (NDI) salts were prepared and used as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors to prepare dimetallic complexes of rhodium and iridium. Infrared spectroelectrochemical studies suggest that the metals are responsive to changes in the electronic state of the NDI moiety. Catalytic testing in the cycloisomerization of alkynoic acids showed that the rhodium and iridium complexes possess effective redox-switching properties.

Summary: Selective hydrogenation of fumarate esters via electrocatalytic CPET using cobaltocene with a tethered Bronsted base as a mediator is demonstrated in this study. High selectivity for electrocatalytic hydrogenation is observed only in the presence of the mediator, and mechanistic analysis reveals two distinct kinetic regimes based on substrate concentration.

Laser spectroscopic and computational insights into unexpected structural behaviours of sandwich complexes upon ionization

Sergey Yu. Ketkov et al.

Summary: Transition-metal sandwich complexes play important roles in various fields due to their ability to form stable or reactive ions. This study presents accurate descriptions of electron detachment in mixed sandwich compounds through mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectra. Laser threshold ionization spectroscopy, combined with DFT calculations, reveals different structural variations upon detachment of the non-bonding d electron from the sandwich molecules, shedding light on the nature of these effects.
