Cobalt nanoparticles embedded in porous N-doped carbon support as a superior catalyst for the p-nitrophenol reduction

Vera V. Butova et al.

Summary: A new cobalt-based composite for catalytic reduction of water pollutant - pnitrophenol has been synthesized and studied. ZIF-67 and its Zn-substituted analog were used as precursors for the catalyst preparation. The pyrolysis of ZIF-67 and Zn-substituted ZIF-67 resulted in cobalt nanoparticles embedded into N-doped carbon substrates. The addition of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as an additive to ZIF-substrates was found to enhance the catalytic properties of the obtained composite material. The PVDF additive reduces the cobalt concentration in the composite while the mesoporous carbon shells on the surface of the catalysts improve the rate of catalytic reactions.

Santosh S. Patil et al.

Summary: Modulating the structure, composition, and morphology of catalysts is crucial for obtaining desired catalytic properties. In this study, different nanostructures of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photocatalysts were synthesized using various methods. The results showed that the reaction temperature played a critical role in stabilizing the crystal structure and surface features. The synthesized BiVO4 photocatalysts exhibited efficient removal of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalytic performance was superior when the catalyst had a mixed-phase structure, compared to those prepared with pure phase pillars and microgranules. This work highlights the importance of synthesis methodology and microstructural modification for the design of visible-light-driven photocatalysts.
