Molecular simulation of the plastic deformation and crack formation in single grit grinding of 4H-SiC single crystal

Shang Gao et al.

Summary: This work investigated the deformation and crack formation of monocrystalline 4H-SiC involved in single grit grinding using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The mechanism for crack initiation and propagation in mono-crystalline 4H-SiC was revealed for the first time. Stress analysis demonstrated the driving forces and propagation directions of the cracks.

Rapid texture depth detection method considering pavement deformation calibration

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: To achieve non-destructive automatic measurement of pavement texture and determine a suitable method for calculating the mean texture depth (MTD), a 3D scan method was used to obtain depth information of the pavement surface. The impact of pavement wheel track deformation on 3D texture was considered, and different data calibration methods and reference plane definitions were compared for MTD calculations. Accelerated wear experiments were conducted to simulate samples with varying abrasion levels for fine-grained and slightly textured pavements, which were then scanned using the 3D method. This method proved effective in measuring fine-grade or highly abrasive pavements that cannot be measured using the mean profile depth (MPD) method. It was found that the deformation calibration resulted in more conservative MTD calculations.

Discussion on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the asphalt materials

Hui Yao et al.

Summary: The application of asphalt materials in pavement engineering has become increasingly widespread and complex. The complexity of asphalt materials, which are non homogeneous and consist of various molecules with different properties, poses challenges to researchers in understanding their properties. The multi-scale research method combines macroscopic experimental data and microscopic simulation results to improve the understanding of asphalt materials. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation proposes a molecular model of asphalt material based on experimental data, and the algorithm can derive properties similar to those of real asphalt.

Styrene modified asphalt based on molecular dynamics

Guannan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase structure of SBS modified asphalt by considering different block ratios and concentrations of SBS molecules. It is found that SBS molecules form dispersed phase at low concentrations and transition to continuous phase as the concentration increases. Resins and aromatics exhibit higher adsorption capacity towards SBS, while asphaltenes show similar adsorption to saturates. The phase structure change has a significant impact on the number of adsorbed molecules.

Evaluation of test methods for measurement of zero shear viscosity (ZSV) of asphalt binders

Waleed Zeiada et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of three commonly used test methods for different types of asphalt binders. The results showed that the ZSV of neat asphalt binders could be accurately and reliably measured using each of the three test methods. However, for SBS-modified asphalt binders, only the shear rate sweep test was feasible for measuring the ZSV.
