Dressed for success. Are crop N uptake, N loss and lint yield of irrigated cotton affected by how in-crop N fertiliser is applied?

Graeme Schwenke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of in-crop urea application method and water-run N product choice on cotton growth and yield. The results showed that sidedressing urea increased cotton growth and N uptake, but did not significantly increase lint yields. Sidedressing also minimized N loss and increased plant nodes and bolls. Water-run N application led to substantial N loss in irrigation runoff, especially with the ammonia treatment. Further research to reduce N loss in irrigation runoff is warranted.

Alkaline Dehydration of Human Urine Collected in Source-Separated Sanitation Systems Using Magnesium Oxide

Prithvi Simha et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of MgO for alkalizing and dehydrating urine, which proved to be effective in reducing urine volume, recovering nitrogen fertilizer, and producing products with high concentrations of macronutrients. By using co-substrates, the process achieved a mass reduction of >90% and N recovery of 80%, showing great potential for urine-diverting sanitation systems.
