Behaviour of CFRP confined square concrete-filled stainless steel tubular columns under uni-axial compression

Hongyuan Tang et al.

Summary: This study examined the behavior of CFRP-confined square CFSST stub columns by conducting tests on three square CFSST columns and nine CFRP-confined square CFSST columns under axial compression. Test parameters included the number of CFRP sheet layers and the thickness of the stainless steel tube. Results showed that all CFRP-confined columns exhibited fracture of CFRP sheets and local buckling of the stainless steel tube at the chamfering. The tested columns followed a typical load-displacement curve with four stages. CFRP sheets effectively restrained the local buckling of CFSST, enhanced the ultimate bearing capacity and ductility index, and increasing the number of CFRP sheet layers and tube thickness resulted in a linear increase in column capacity. A calculation method for the ultimate bearing capacity of square CFSST stub columns was proposed based on the twin-shear unified strength theory, and two simplified methods for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of CFRP-confined square CFSST stub columns were obtained using the superposition method and regression analysis.

Experimental study on the flexural behavior of square high-strength concrete-filled steel tube beams with different CFRP wrapping schemes

Yansheng Du et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental investigation on the flexural behavior of square high-strength concrete-filled steel tube beams with different CFRP wrapping schemes. The results show that the performance of CFRP confined CFST beams is significantly improved due to the transverse confinement and longitudinal reinforcement of CFRP sheets. A simplified approach using the fiber element method is proposed to predict the moment-curvature relationship and ultimate moment capacity of the CFRP-CFST beams.

Performance of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) members with circumferential gap under lateral impact

Peijia Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of circumferential gap on the impact-resistance capacity of CFST columns through experimental tests and finite element analysis. The test results show that the failure mode, impact force, and deflection of specimens with gaps differ from those without gaps. The finite element analysis further explores the force transfer mechanism of CFST with a gap. A simplified formula for predicting the dynamic flexural capacity considering the influence of the circumferential gap is proposed.

Analysis and calculation method for concrete-encased CFST columns under eccentric compression

Xiaojun Ke et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational method for analyzing concrete-encased concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns under eccentric compression. The method considers the confinement effect provided by stirrups and incorporates it into the constitutive law of encased concrete. The accuracy of the method is verified through numerous tests and a created database of 207 models with various parameters. The results show that the method is applicable to a wide range of structures and has sufficient precision, although it may underestimate the N-M interaction curves due to the ignorance of exact integration about irregular section shapes.

Flexural behavior of circular concrete filled steel tubular members strengthened by CFRP sheets

Jialing Ou et al.

Summary: The flexural behavior of CFRP-strengthened circular concrete filled steel tubular (CFRP-C-CFST) members was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The effects of different CFRP wrapping length, number of CFRP layers and wrapping schemes on the flexural behavior of the CFRP-C-CFST specimens were analyzed based on experimental results. Two failure modes, including CFRP debonding and CFRP fracture, were observed. A theoretical model based on fiber element method was proposed, which accurately predicted the flexural capacity, stiffness and ductility of the CFRP-C-CFST members.

Axial loading mechanism analyses and evaluation methods of CCFT short columns with gap defects

Qihan Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of gap defects on the axial loading performance of CCFT short columns and found that the appearance of gap defects significantly weakened or delayed the contact behavior between the infilled concrete and the hollow tube, affecting the axial resistance of the CCFT short columns. Design approaches using confinement regionalization and circumferential expansion thoughts were proposed to accurately evaluate the load bearing capacities of the axially-compressed CCFT short columns with gap defects.

Behavior of FRP Ring-Confined CFST columns under axial compression

Jun-Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on strengthening CFST columns with FRP rings to increase their load capacity and improve their performance under compression. Experimental results show that FRP rings substantially enhance the ultimate load capacity and slightly enhance the yield strength of CFST columns.
