Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Reduces Oxidative Stress and Inflammation, and Increases Growth Factors Favouring the Healing Process of Diabetic Wounds

Xavier Capo et al.

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is clinically used to apply oxygen at pressures higher than atmospheric pressure. This study aimed to analyze the effects of HBOT on plasma oxidative and inflammation biomarkers and growth factors in patients with chronic diabetic wounds. The results showed that HBOT reduced oxidative and pro-inflammatory mediators, and increased the release of growth factors, potentially playing a role in wound healing, angiogenesis, and vascular tone regulation.

Polarization of Microglia and Its Therapeutic Potential in Sepsis

Leo Victor G. Castro et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. One of the most affected regions is the central nervous system (CNS), where neurons are exposed to oxidative stress, leading to dysfunction and apoptosis. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common type of organ dysfunction that has limited treatment options. Microglia polarization, with a focus on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), holds potential for therapeutic intervention in sepsis-related neuroinflammation.

Sepsis-associated brain injury: underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies for acute and long-term cognitive impairments

Nobufumi Sekino et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. It induces cerebral dysfunction, disruption of the blood-brain barrier, neuroinflammation, hypoperfusion, and accumulation of amyloid beta and tau protein in the brain. However, there is currently no specific treatment for cognitive impairments in sepsis. Antibiotics, targeting proinflammatory cytokines, and preventing ischemic injuries and hypoperfusion are suggested for the acute phase, while targeting neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, protein phosphorylation, and specific receptors are suggested for the late phase of sepsis.

Inflammatory gene expression during acute high-altitude exposure

Kathy Pham et al.

Summary: Acute high-altitude exposure upregulates inflammatory signaling pathways and may sensitize the TLR4 signaling pathway to subsequent inflammatory stimuli. These results provide insight into how hypoxia-induced inflammation may contribute to high-altitude pathologies and exacerbate inflammatory responses in critical illnesses associated with hypoxemia.

Summary: This article systematically describes the pathogenesis of Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) and demonstrates the close relationship between microglia and the occurrence and development of SAE. The authors also discuss the function and phenotype of microglia and summarize their role in the pathogenesis of SAE. Finally, the review summarizes recent studies on treating cognitive impairment in SAE by blocking microglial activation and toxic factors produced after activation.

Sepsis and Cerebral Dysfunction: BBB Damage, Neuroinflammation, Oxidative Stress, Apoptosis and Autophagy as Key Mediators and the Potential Therapeutic Approaches

Ming Gu et al.

Summary: Sepsis-associated cerebral dysfunction is a complex pathology resulting from primary infections, affecting vulnerable populations like neonates, elderly individuals, and chronically ill patients. Various methods, including electrophysiological recordings and imaging techniques, are used for detection and diagnosis. Mechanisms involve blood-brain barrier permeability, metalloprotease activity, and other factors leading to cerebrovascular damage.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment: Effects on Mitochondrial Function and Oxidative Stress

Nofar Schottlender et al.

Summary: HBOT increases dissolved oxygen in the blood, affecting mitochondrial activity and ROS levels. Short-term treatment may have deleterious effects, while long-term treatment improves mitochondrial function and reduces ROS levels. Different conditions of treatment can lead to varied effects on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress.
