Biomimetic Metal-Organic Framework-Based Photonic Crystal Sensor for Highly Sensitive Visual Detection and Effective Discrimination of Benzene Vapor

Lei Gao et al.

Summary: A porous one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) sensor is constructed by combining ZIF-8 with TiO2@PDAnanoparticles, which shows significant color changes under different concentrations of benzene vapor and reaches a detection limit of 0.8 g/m(3). The sensor has a response time of less than 1 s and maintains stable optical performance after 100 times of reuse. This study provides valuable insights for the fabrication of high-quality MOF-based PC sensors and the study of the sensing mechanism between microscopic molecular adsorption and macroscopic performance.

Benjamin Siu et al.

Summary: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are harmful air pollutants that originate from industrial chemical processes. Metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as potential adsorbents for VOC capture due to their flexible structure and large surface area. This review summarizes recent developments in the selective adsorption of different classes of VOCs by MOFs and discusses methods for enhancing the hydrophobicity of MOF micropores. It also explores the commercialization and scale-up of MOFs in various industries.

A Highly Sensitive Toluene and Xylene QCM Nanosensor Using Nanoporous MIL-101(Cr) as a Sensing Layer

Elahe Haghighi et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple method to create a metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101(Cr) coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature. The MOF has a large surface area and higher adsorption capacity than other materials tested. The synthesized MOF was characterized and then used as a thin film on the QCM electrode. The sensor showed high sensitivity to o-xylene and toluene, along with short response/recovery time and low detection limits.

Comparison of Thin-Film Capacitor Geometries for the Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds Using a ZIF-8 Affinity Layer

Aleksander Matavz et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for adsorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to their chemical diversity, uniform pore sizes, and large internal surface areas. This study compares two geometries of capacitive VOC sensors using the MOF material ZIF-8 as an affinity layer. The metal-insulator-metal (MIM) sandwich configuration with a permeable top electrode (thickness < 25 nm) shows superior sensitivity, improved detection limit, and smaller footprint compared to the conventional interdigitated electrode layout. Additionally, the transduction of VOC adsorption in ZIF-8 through MIM capacitors is more sensitive to polar VOCs and exhibits better selectivity at high loadings compared to gravimetric and optical transductions.
