Explosion characteristics and combustion mechanism of hydrogen/tungsten dust hybrid mixtures

Xiaozhe Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the explosion and flame propagation characteristics of hydrogen/tungsten dust hybrid mixtures through experiments and analyzed the structure and composition of the explosion residues. A mechanism for the combustion of a hydrogen/tungsten dust hybrid mixture was established based on the residues analysis, explaining the effects of various factors on the combustion behaviors.

Discrete element modeling of a particle heater for energy storage systems

Jason Schirck et al.

Summary: This study simulates a heater using discrete element modeling, investigating the effects of conductive, convective, and interphase heat transfer on particle heating. The results show that decreasing the inclination angle and friction coefficients enhance heating, while high friction coefficients weaken the heat transfer.

Large-scale dust explosions in vessel-pipe systems

Lorenz R. Boeck et al.

Summary: This study investigates dust explosions in vessel-pipe systems and compares them with previous experiments on quiescent propane-air mixtures to understand the differences in flame propagation and peak pressures. The experimental results show that dust explosions have higher reactivity and faster flame propagation due to elevated initial turbulence. A physics-based model designed for gas explosions in vessel-pipe systems is extended to predict the dynamics of dust combustion, successfully capturing the effects of ignition location and effective dust reactivity.

Explosion hazards of mixed aluminum/aluminum hydride dust cloud in a closed vessel

Hangwei Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the explosion characteristics and mechanism of Al/air, AlH3/air, and Al/AlH3/air systems through experiments and simulations. The results showed that the induction time of Al dust explosion was shorter than that of AlH3, but the explosion severity of Al dust was smaller than that of AlH3. The addition of AlH3 dust in the three-component system shortened the explosion induction time.

Effect of turbulence intensity on flame propagation and extinction limits of methane/coal dust explosions

Haipeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the turbulence intensity has a significant impact on flame propagation velocity and extinction limits of methane/coal dust explosions. Increase in turbulence intensity led to accelerated flame propagation velocity and higher extinction limits of CH4/coal flames.

Wildfires and the generation of fire whirls

Adriana Palacios et al.

Summary: This paper first reviews the mode of generation, properties, and operational regimes of fire whirls under controlled experimental conditions. A modified analytical approach is then described for wildfires, aiming to define the regimes of possible fire whirl generation based on global energy levels and fire spread rates. Although the accuracy is not on par with laboratory flames, the approach appears to be practically sufficient.
