Ion adsorption stabilizes bulk nanobubbles

Xiaotong Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of bulk nanobubbles in electrolyte solutions under different pH levels and ionic strengths, demonstrating their survival in acidic and basic solutions due to effective accumulation of net charges. The kinetic stability of nanobubbles in various aqueous solutions is evaluated within the classic DLVO framework, and a model capturing the influence of ion species and bulk concentration on the nanobubble's surface potential is described. Discussions on the contradiction between quantitative calculation and experimental results highlight the need for insights into the atomic-scale structure and dynamics of interfacial water.

Research progress on bulk nanobubbles

Le Sun et al.

Summary: There are still fundamental problems in the basic research of bulk nanobubbles, including whether they are truly nanoscale bubbles or contaminants, and the stability mechanism that differs from the Epstein-Plesset theory. This paper discusses the contradiction between traditional theory predictions and observed lifetimes of bulk nanobubbles, examines the possibility of gas aggregates, and reviews existing models and conditions that influence their stability. Additionally, it provides guidance on production and characterization methods for the wide range of commercial applications of bulk nanobubbles.

Difference in cadmium chemisorption on calcite and vaterite porous particles

Ryo Sasamoto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influences of polymorph and specific surface area on cadmium adsorption. It is found that porous calcite particles exhibit a faster reaction and relatively high adsorbed capacity for cadmium ions, while porous vaterite particles have a larger adsorbed amount.

Effect of sucrose on CO2 storage, vaterite content, and CaCO3 particle size in indirect carbonation using seawater

Geunyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of adding sucrose to seawater in an indirect carbonation process. The results show that sucrose addition increases CO2 storage, vaterite content, and decreases the size of CaCO3 particles. Adding sucrose before Ca elution is more advantageous than adding sucrose after, as it leads to higher vaterite content and smaller particle size. This technology has the potential for economically producing small-sized pure vaterite using seawater and sucrose.

Synergistic removal of As(III) and Cd(II) by sepiolite-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron and a related mechanistic study

Meihaguli Ainiwaer et al.

Summary: A simple scheme for synthesizing modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was established for simultaneous removal of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) from water. Batch experiments showed that S-nZVI had better adsorption capacities for As and Cd compared to other materials, and a possible underlying mechanism was illuminated.

Enhanced Cd adsorption by red mud modified bean-worm skin biochars in weakly alkali environment

Yubo Yan et al.

Summary: Red mud and waste bean-worm skin were co-pyrolyzed to develop modified biochars for Cd adsorption. The modification process improved the porous structure and increased the adsorption capacity. The results showed that higher modification temperatures led to faster adsorption rates, higher adsorption capacity, and stronger sorption affinity. The soil study demonstrated the practicality and usefulness of using modified biochars in weakly alkali soil.

Facile synthesis of pure vaterite using steamed ammonia liquid waste and ammonium carbonate without additives via simple mechanical mixing

Xuewen Song et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple method for synthesizing high-purity porous vaterite calcium carbonate (CaCO3) using steamed ammonia liquid waste and (NH4)(2)CO3, and characterizes the obtained samples using various techniques. The effects of stirring speed and stirring mode on the morphology, particle size, and stability of vaterite are investigated systematically, revealing their crucial roles in the crystallization process. Additionally, a possible mechanism for obtaining smaller vaterite CaCO3 particles at high stirring speed and the properties of ammonia-distilled waste liquid during vaterite formation are discussed.
