Development of a hysteresis model based on axisymmetric and homotopic properties to predict moisture transfer in building materials

Ahmad Deeb et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new mathematical model of hysteresis and incorporates it into a hygrothermal model to reduce the discrepancy between numerical and experimental results and accurately predict the durability of building materials. The model is based on the symmetry property of sorption curves and uses a homotopic transformation relative to a parameter S∈[0, 1]. The results show that the model reliably predicts hysteresis loops of various materials and outperforms other existing models.

Hygro-thermal characterization of the hemp concrete modified with the gum Arabic admixture

Piotr Lapka et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hygro-thermal properties of hemp concrete modified with gum Arabic (GA) admixture. The study examines the effects of modifying agents on density, porosity, thermal conductivity, vapor permeability, sorption/desorption curves, and capillary uptake. The findings show that the addition of GA affects density, porosity, thermal conductivity, water vapor permeability, sorption/desorption behavior, and capillary rise of hemp concrete.

Performance improvement of hemp-shiv cementitious composites through hot water and steam treatment

Mazen J. Al-Kheetan

Summary: The research aims to reduce waste disposal by incorporating hemp shiv into cementitious composites. Hot water and steam treatment improved the mechanical properties of the composites by altering the surface of hemp shiv and promoting better bonding with the cementitious binder. The treatment also resulted in changes in the surface chemistry and crystallinity of hemp shiv, leading to significant enhancements in compressive and flexural strengths of the mortar.

Effective thermal conductivity model of straw bales based on microstructure and hygrothermal characterization

Ghadie Tlaiji et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine a mathematical equation for predicting the effective thermal conductivity of straw bales that can be applied to different types of straw in various circumstances. The equation is established based on the size, distribution, and morphology of straw fibers determined from microscopic images, using heat transfer models of porous and fibrous materials. The accuracy of the numerical model is validated through experimental measurements of thermal conductivity by altering the density, relative humidity, and temperature of the straw bales, showing good agreement between the numerical and experimental results.

Physical and mechanical properties of sustainable vegetal concrete exposed to extreme weather conditions

Muhammad Riaz Ahmad et al.

Summary: The study found that vegetal concrete exposed to extreme environmental conditions experienced loss in mass, reduction in sample area, and decrease in compressive strength, mainly due to the dissolution and leaching out of the binder. When immersed in salt solution, the concrete mixtures exhibited mass increase and swelling due to the formation of salt layer on the surface.
