Sex differences in the associations of body size and body shape with platelets in the UK Biobank cohort

Sofia Christakoudi et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with low-grade inflammation and increased risk of venous thromboembolism, but the associations with platelet count and body shape are unclear. This study used different body shape indices to evaluate the associations of body mass index (BMI), allometric body shape index (ABSI), and hip index (HI) with platelet count and size. The results showed that the associations vary between different groups and factors such as sex, age, alcohol consumption, and smoking play a role.

Body image perception and body composition in early adolescents: a longitudinal study of an Italian cohort

Stefania Toselli et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a sensitive period of life characterized by physical and psychological changes. This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in body composition and weight status in Italian adolescents over 3 years of middle school, and to analyze the influence of these parameters on body image perception and satisfaction. The results showed differences in body composition changes between males and females, with associations found between body image perception, BMI, and sex. Monitoring body image perception in young adolescents, especially in females and those who are overweight or obese, is crucial for preventing nutritional disorders.

Self-management at the core of back pain care: 10 key points for clinicians

Alice Kongsted et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of clinicians supporting self-management for people with persistent back pain and which actions clinicians can take to integrate self-management support in their care. Self-management empowers individuals to make informed decisions and seek medical advice when necessary, with the organizational support in clinical settings and health systems being crucial. While there is no clear evidence on the most effective way to support self-management for back pain, working with cognitions related to pain, behavior change, and patient autonomy are identified as core elements.
