Photo-controllable Luminescence from Radicals Leading to Ratiometric Emission Switching via Dynamic Intermolecular Coupling

Jia-Ming Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel photo-controllable luminescent radical system (TBIQ) was reported, which showed a wide range of ratiometric color changes via light excitation. The conjugated skeleton of TBIQ was decorated with steric-demanding tertiary butyl groups, enabling dynamic intermolecular coupling for controllable behaviors. The study revealed that the planarization process of TBIQ's helicenic pseudo-planar conformation after light excitation led to the generation of radicals via intermolecular charge transfer. This photo-controllable luminescent radical system was employed for high-level information encryption, offering unique insights into molecular dynamic motion for optical manufacturing and broadening the scope of smart-responsive materials for advanced applications.

Self-recovering mechanochromic luminescence of the derivatives of benzanthrone and carbazole: Towards damage-resistive information recording and security probes

Uliana Tsiko et al.

Summary: Discovery of organic luminophores with unique properties typically leads to new applications in organic optoelectronics. In this study, a newly synthesized mechanochromic derivative of benzanthrone and carbazole demonstrates self-regulation of its solid-state structure and related light-emitting properties. The compound exhibits intense green emission in the initial state, weak yellowish green emission after mechanical treatment, and self-recovers back to intense green emission. These processes are completely reversible. The compound has potential applications in security probes or data/code writing due to its ability to recover after mechanical damage. Experimental studies revealed that the compound can form different polymorphs and aggregates in solid-state responsible for its multicolour mechanochromic emission.
