Microstructural evolution of pre-oxidized Cr-coated Zry-4 during annealing in argon

Junkai Liu et al.

Summary: The annealing behavior of pre-oxidized Cr-coated Zry-4 in argon at 1200 degrees C was investigated. The Cr2O3 scale formed on the sample surface after pre-oxidation in steam, and its thickness decreased during annealing due to various reactions and diffusions. The Cr2O3 scale transformed into Cr after one hour of annealing, and pores and Cr grains were observed inside the scale.

Evolution of Cr/Cr2O3 interface in Cr-coated zirconium alloy in high temperature steam

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: A textured Cr-coating was deposited on Zr-based nuclear fuel cladding and subjected to steam oxidation at 1200 degrees C. The resulting Cr2O3 layer exhibited thickening-thinning transition and undulation at the Cr/Cr2O3 interface. Electron microscopy characterization revealed that the convex tips of the interface were linked to grain boundaries of residual Cr-coating, reducing Cr2O3 grains into Cr grains. The reduction reaction at the interface explained the undulation and consumption of protective oxides. This study provides insights into the failure mechanism of protective oxides on ATF Cr-coatings.

Diffusion of chromium of Cr-coated Zircaloy accident tolerant fuel cladding: Model development and experimental validation

Dongju Kim et al.

Summary: A mechanistic model based on Finite Difference Method (FDM) has been developed and validated to calculate Cr diffusion for Cr-coated Zircaloy cladding. The model has been incorporated into TRANOX 2.0. Experimental data was used to obtain chromium diffusion coefficients for each phase of the multilayered Cr-coated cladding. Extensive high temperature annealing experiments in the range of 1000-1300 degrees C confirmed the accuracy of the model predictions by comparing them with Cr distribution measured by EPMA. The developed model can predict diffusional loss coating thickness of Cr-coated Accident Tolerant Fuel.

Oxidation behavior and kinetics of magnetron-sputtered Cr-coated Zr alloy cladding in 1000-1300 °C steam environment

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: The isothermal oxidation behavior of magnetron-sputtered Cr-coated Zr-1Nb alloy cladding in a steam environment ranging from 1000 to 1300 degrees Celsius was studied. The findings indicate that the oxidation resistance of the Cr coating is maintained at 1000 and 1100 degrees Celsius for more than 6 hours under double-sided oxidation, but degradation occurs during long-duration oxidation at 1200 and 1300 degrees Celsius. After coating degradation, the Zr substrate is oxidized before the metallic Cr, and complete oxidation of the metallic Cr occurs only after the growth of the ZrO2 layer beneath the coating reaches a certain thickness. The thickness of the Cr2O3 film decreases after a certain oxidation duration due to the redox reaction between Zr and Cr2O3 and the preferential oxidation of the Zr substrate. The protective effect of the Cr coating is still present to some extent after degradation at 1200 degrees Celsius, while it is almost lost at 1300 degrees Celsius.

Eutectic reaction and oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zircaloy-4 accident-tolerant fuel cladding under various heating rates

Dongju Kim et al.

Summary: The Cr-coated zirconium alloy claddings show limited effectiveness in preventing oxidation and degradation of cladding during eutectic reaction. The oxidation rate increases significantly after the occurrence of the Zr-Cr eutectic reaction, especially at higher heating rates. These findings are important for understanding the capabilities and degradation behaviors of Cr-coated cladding under severe accidental scenarios.

An innovative method for building the model of oxidation resistance of Cr coatings

Song Zeng et al.

Summary: The oxidation resistance of Cr coating is affected by its thickness and oxidation time. A high-throughput method is used to build a model that represents the thickness effect. Magnetron sputtering is employed to deposit a wide range of coating thickness gradients. Experimental results and literature show that coating thicknesses greater than 10.7 μm offer partial protection, while 16.0 μm coatings offer complete protection after being oxidized at 1200 degrees C for 50 min.

Implementation of chrome oxidation model into best-estimate system code for accident tolerant fuel

Dong-Young Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a chrome oxidation model was integrated into the MARS-KS 1.5 code to enhance the prediction of accident tolerant fuel with chrome-coated cladding. Initially, a multi-layer cladding model was implemented to investigate the peak cladding temperature (PCT) under different coating thicknesses during large break loss-of-coolant accidents. The results indicated that increasing the coating thickness led to a decrease in blowdown PCT, while the reflood PCT showed no clear trend. Subsequently, a chrome-coated cladding oxidation model was developed and validated by comparing weight gain due to oxidation using experimental data. The Parisi et al. (2020) model exhibited significantly lower weight gain, while the Wu et al. (2020) model provided relatively good predictions. However, some scatter in the oxidation data highlighted the necessity of developing specific oxidation models for each Cr-coated cladding candidate to improve prediction accuracy.

Influence of coating parameters on oxidation behavior of Cr-coated zirconium alloy for accident tolerant fuel claddings

E. B. Kashkarov et al.

Summary: In this study, Cr coatings with different structures and thicknesses were deposited on Zr alloy to investigate their oxidation behavior at different temperatures. It was found that the microstructure and thickness of the coatings significantly influenced the oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zr alloy. The activation energy for chromium oxidation decreased significantly when the microstructure of the coating changed from dense to porous. In addition, the interdiffusion between Cr and Zr prevented the formation of chromium oxide film and caused direct oxidation of the alloy at high temperatures.

Systematic investigations on the coating degradation mechanism during the steam oxidation of Cr-coated Zry-4 at 1200°C

Junkai Liu et al.

Summary: The isothermal oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zircaloy-4 in steam at 1200 degrees C has been comprehensively investigated. The oxidation kinetics transition occurs when Zr outward diffusion and precipitation of ZrO2 at the Cr coating grain boundaries reach the Cr2O3/Cr interface. The outward diffused Zr reduces Cr2O3 scale to Cr and forms pores at the Cr2O3/Cr interface and inside the Cr2O3 scale after the transition. These interfacial pores affect the oxidation mechanism of Cr-coated Zry-4, and the coating failure and oxidation of the Zry-4 substrate occur when the thickness of the outer Cr2O3 scale decreases to a certain value.
