Boosting safety and performance of lithium-ion battery enabled by cooperation of thermotolerant fire-retardant composite membrane and nonflammable electrolyte

Man-Cheng Long et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermotolerant and fire-resistant nanoCaCO3-based composite membrane was designed, which shows excellent thermal stability and nonflammability. The membrane can neutralize hydrofluoric acid in LiPF6-based electrolytes, guaranteeing the long-term stability of interfacial layers. The LiFePO4/Li battery with this membrane exhibited high discharge capacity, capacity retention, and coulombic efficiency after multiple cycles. Additionally, the full battery with the composite membrane showed good cycling stability even at high temperature and high current.

Instability of PVDF Binder in the LiFePO4 versus Li4Ti5O12 Li-Ion Battery Cell

Daniela Leanza et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the conventional PVDF binder used in Li-ion batteries is electrochemically unstable at relatively low potentials, degrading and forming a LiF layer during charge and discharge cycles. The degradation continues over subsequent cycles, especially under increased cycling temperatures. This has implications for interpreting electrochemical data and understanding the stability of PVDF-based electrodes, particularly in high-voltage battery cells with extreme cycling conditions.
