Comparison of saturation vapor pressures of α-pinene + O3 oxidation products derived from COSMO-RS computations and thermal desorption experiments

Noora Hyttinen et al.

Summary: Accurate determination of gas-to-particle partitioning is crucial for modeling secondary organic aerosol formation. In this study, we estimated the saturation vapor pressures of alpha-pinene-ozonolysis-derived secondary organic aerosol constituents using experimental and computational methods. The results showed a good agreement between the two methods for molecules with molar masses around 190 g mol(-1) and higher.

Synthesis and Hydrolysis of Atmospherically Relevant Monoterpene-Derived Organic Nitrates

Yuchen Wang et al.

Summary: The study synthesized seven monoterpene-derived ONs and investigated their hydrolysis in bulk solutions at different pH values. The results showed that the hydrolysis lifetimes were related to alkyl substitution numbers, functional groups, and carbon skeletons. Tertiary and secondary ONs hydrolyzed via an acid-catalyzed unimolecular mechanism, while primary ONs showed a competition of unimolecular and bimolecular mechanisms.

Significance of the organic aerosol driven climate feedback in the boreal area

Taina Yli-Juuti et al.

Summary: Aerosol particles can cool the climate by scattering solar radiation and acting as cloud condensation nuclei. Research suggests that warmer temperatures lead to increased emissions of biogenic secondary organic aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei concentrations, creating a negative climate feedback mechanism. Direct observations using aerosol chemical composition measurements and remote sensing observations revealed a clear increase in organic aerosol loadings and cloud condensation nuclei concentration with temperature in a boreal forest environment.

Evolution of volatility and composition in sesquiterpene-mixed and α-pinene secondary organic aerosol particles during isothermal evaporation

Zijun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the isothermal evaporation behavior of alpha-pinene and sesquiterpene mixture (SQTmix) SOA particles under different relative humidity conditions. It was found that SQTmix SOA particles evaporated slower than alpha-pinene particles due to their lower volatility and possibly higher viscosity under dry conditions. By applying positive matrix factorization (PMF) to analyze thermal desorption data, it was shown that the evolution of each sample factor was controlled by different processes depending on particle type and evaporation timescale.

The importance of sesquiterpene oxidation products for secondary organic aerosol formation in a springtime hemiboreal forest

Luis M. F. Barreira et al.

Summary: This study used a combination of a Filter Inlet for Gases and Aerosols (FI-GAERO) and a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) with iodide ionization to evaluate the relative contribution of sesquiterpene oxidation products to SOA in a springtime hemiboreal forest environment. The results showed that both monoterpene and sesquiterpene oxidation products were major contributors to SOA particles, indicating that sesquiterpenes may play an important role in atmospheric SOA formation and oxidation chemistry, especially during the spring recovery period.

Pre-deliquescent water uptake in deposited nanoparticles observed with in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Jack J. Lin et al.

Summary: Water molecules adsorb onto inorganic sodium chloride and organic malonic acid and sucrose nanoparticles at low relative humidities, with malonic acid particles showing clear changes in surface chemical composition and environment. This suggests that water uptake by aerosol particles could impact atmospheric chemistry even at low relative humidities, highlighting the importance of studying surface chemical changes using techniques like APXPS.

On the calibration of FIGAERO-ToF-CIMS: importance and impact of calibrant delivery for the particle-phase calibration

Arttu Ylisirnio et al.

Summary: This study identified a major source of error in the widely used syringe deposition calibration method that may lead to an overestimation of saturation vapour pressures. A new volatility calibration method using atomized calibration compounds was proposed, which showed significant differences in observed T-max values compared to the syringe method at the lowest solution concentration. The results highlight the importance of accurate calibration methods when deriving the volatility basis set from measurements of secondary organic aerosols.
