Metagenomics Analysis to Investigate the Microbial Communities and Their Functional Profile During Cyanobacterial Blooms in Lake Varese

Isabella Sanseverino et al.

Summary: Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are caused by the mass proliferation of photosynthetic prokaryotic microorganisms in water environments, posing serious threats to aquatic organisms and human health. A study in Lake Varese, northern Italy, found Cyanobacteria to be more abundant in the lake, with the blooms mainly dominated by the species Lyngbya robusta. Additionally, a specific functional profile characterized the bacterial population along the water column, and a large and diverse phage population was also identified in the shotgun data analysis.

Malaysian Virgin Soil Extracts as Natural Growth Enhancer for Targeted Green Microalgae Species

Maegala Nallapan Maniyam et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of using extracts from virgin soil as natural growth-promoting nutrients for microalgae cultivation. The results showed that the addition of sustainable and inexpensive soil extracts promoted the growth of microalgae, and further research on optimizing the culture conditions for enhanced microalgae growth will be conducted for mass production.

Kinetics Growth and Recovery of Valuable Nutrients from Selangor Peat Swamp and Pristine Forest Soils Using Different Extraction Methods as Potential Microalgae Growth Enhancers

Nor Suhaila Yaacob et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of virgin soils from Peninsular Malaysia as growth enhancers for microalgae, finding that autoclave extraction method at 121 degrees C twice is the most effective in promoting growth. This method results in higher concentrations of total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon in the soil extracts, ultimately reducing the cost and need for synthetic medium in microalgae cultivation. The high recovery rate of nutrients from the soil extracts presents a significant potential as a growth promoter for microalgae.

Structural and Functional Shift in Soil Bacterial Community in Response to Long-Term Compost Amendment in Paddy Field

Sookjin Kim et al.

Summary: The microbial community composition and diversity of agricultural soils are influenced by management practices, with compost application known to increase soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Amplicon sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene showed significant differences in community composition between soils amended with compost and those without compost. Functional gene abundance related to plant growth promotion, development, and decomposition was higher in compost-amended soil, indicating potential benefits for agricultural sustainability.

Assessment of Aqueous Extraction Methods on Extractable Organic Matter and Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic Fractions of Virgin Forest Soils

Wan Muhammad Ikram Wan Mohd Zamri et al.

Summary: Assessing water-extractable organic matter using an autoclave provides valuable insights into soil physical, chemical, and biological changes. Extracts from Malaysian forest soils revealed higher levels of dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, and ammonium-nitrate content under autoclave conditions. Soil extracts became slightly acidic with increased temperature and duration, with varying concentrations of fractions observed based on different extraction methods, suggesting potential applications in microbial studies.

Important ecophysiological roles of non-dominant Actinobacteria in plant residue decomposition, especially in less fertile soils

Yuanyuan Bao et al.

Summary: This study revealed the important ecological and physiological roles of Actinobacteria in plant residue decomposition, especially in different levels of soil fertility. Actinobacteria encoded a high proportion of carbohydrate-active enzymes and maintained relatively stable presence in terms of taxonomic composition and functional roles during plant residue decomposition. Their importance for decomposition was more pronounced in less fertile soils due to increased functional genes and interspecies interactions.
