Water cost savings from soil biochar amendment: A spatial analysis

Jennifer E. Kroeger et al.

Summary: While there is a lot of literature on the water and nutrient retention abilities of biochar, there is limited research connecting these benefits to biochar qualities, water retention mechanisms, and optimal locations for agricultural use. More information is needed to help biochar stakeholders make informed deployment decisions.

Can N2O emissions offset the benefits from soil organic carbon storage?

Bertrand Guenet et al.

Summary: In order to meet the global warming targets set by the Paris Agreement, drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are required alongside large-scale deployment of other climate mitigation strategies. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is an important lever, but it must be considered that this may lead to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, offsetting some of the climate benefits.

Crop yield and water productivity under salty water irrigation: A global meta-analysis

Minghui Cheng et al.

Summary: The results showed that salty water irrigation significantly reduced crop yield, WP, and IWP compared to fresh water irrigation, with saline water irrigation causing larger reductions than brackish water irrigation. Cotton performed best under saline water irrigation, followed by wheat, maize, tomato, and pepper. Improved soil properties such as decreased bulk density and increased pH were found to increase crop yield regardless of irrigation water salinity.

Management of cover crops in temperate climates influences soil organic carbon stocks: a meta-analysis

Shelby C. McClelland et al.

Summary: Cover cropping can increase soil carbon stocks in temperate climates, with factors such as planting and termination dates, annual cover crop biomass production, and soil clay content playing key roles in determining the magnitude of this impact. Continuous cover or autumn planting and termination of cover crops, along with high annual biomass production, are associated with greater increases in soil carbon stocks. Management strategies focused on maximizing net primary productivity through improved synchronization between cover crop growing windows and environmental conditions can enhance the effectiveness of cover cropping in sequestering carbon in agricultural ecosystems.

Summary: Cover crops enhance soil microbial community biomass and affect community structure compared to no cover crops, with responses varying depending on soil type, climatic conditions, and cover crop types. Incorporating cover crop residue into the soil can increase certain microbial parameters but decrease others.

A global meta-analysis of greenhouse gases emission and crop yield under no-tillage as compared to conventional tillage

Awais Shakoor et al.

Summary: No-tillage (NT) practice has been widely adopted to improve soil conditions and reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions. However, its effects on GHGs emissions and crop yields remain inconsistent. A global meta-analysis showed that NT increased CO2, N2O, and CH4 emissions compared to conventional tillage (CT), but also led to a slight decline in global warming potential. Increasing nitrogen (N) fertilization rates under NT improved both crop yield and GHGs emissions, especially in irrigated areas.

Using the ecosystem engineer concept to test the functional effects of a decrease in earthworm abundance due to an historic metal pollution gradient

Y. Capowiez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that there is a positive correlation between the distance from the factory and the abundance of earthworms, as well as the loss of physical soil properties. The development of burrow systems in soil and water infiltration both increase with distance from the factory. The findings suggest the importance of adopting a functional approach to studying the spatial effects of contamination on soil ecological processes and fertility.

Greater, but not necessarily better: The influence of biochar on soil hydraulic properties

Sheikh M. F. Rabbi et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis revealed that high rates of biochar application only improved the water holding capacity of sandy soils, while the effect on hydraulic properties of other soil types was limited. Biochar types and pyrolysis temperatures did not significantly influence soil hydraulic properties. The efficiency of biochar may depend on its pore size distribution and hydrophobicity.

Does biochar application improve soil aggregation? A meta-analysis

Mahbub Ul Islam et al.

Summary: Biochar as a potential soil amendment can significantly improve soil aggregation through different biochar attributes, soil properties, and experimental conditions. Wood biochar with higher pyrolysis temperature and a larger amount of biochar have a more positive influence on soil aggregation. Wet sieving method is more effective in assessing soil aggregation than dry sieving method. Additionally, soil aggregation is enhanced in neutral and acidic soils, and loam-textured soils compared to sandy soils.
