Rapid growth of anthropogenic organic nanoparticles greatly alters cloud life cycle in the Amazon rainforest

Rahul A. Zaveri et al.

Summary: This study presents aircraft observations of rapid growth of anthropogenic nanoparticles downwind of an isolated metropolis in the Amazon rainforest. Model analysis suggests that the sustained particle growth to cloud condensation nuclei sizes is mainly caused by particle-phase diffusion-limited partitioning of semivolatile oxidation products of biogenic hydrocarbons. Cloud-resolving numerical simulations show that the increased cloud condensation nuclei concentrations in the urban plume significantly alter cloud formation and precipitation, suggesting an appreciable impact of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud life cycle in previously unpolluted forests of the world.

Tight Coupling of Surface and In-Plant Biochemistry and Convection Governs Key Fine Particulate Components over the Amazon Rainforest

Manish Shrivastava et al.

Summary: Combining aircraft measurements and model simulations, this study reveals the important role of in-plant biochemistry in fine particulate formation and atmosphere-biosphere- climate interactions over the Amazon rainforest. The study shows that direct emissions of certain gases formed by in-plant biochemical reactions explain a significant portion of sub-micrometer aerosol particles in the upper troposphere.

Morphology and Viscosity Changes after Reactive Uptake of Isoprene Epoxydiols in Submicrometer Phase Separated Particles with Secondary Organic Aerosol Formed from Different Volatile Organic Compounds

Ziying Lei et al.

Summary: The reactive uptake of VOC-derived semivolatile oxidation products on inorganic-organic submicron particles was studied, and it was found that the viscosity and morphology of the particles changed significantly after the uptake. The changes were highly dependent on the VOC precursor, and the impact on air quality and climate predictions could be altered.

Single particle measurements of mixing between mimics for biomass burning and aged secondary organic aerosols

Luke Habib et al.

Summary: Gas-phase exchange between aerosols is an important mechanism of mixing particles. However, diffusion limitations can impede this exchange in highly viscous or glassy particles. This study examines the mixing state of different particle populations and suggests that diffusion limitations can be alleviated at a relative humidity threshold, which increases with decreasing ambient temperatures. Non-volatile sugar particles show little to no diffusion limitations under tested conditions.

Determining Activity Coefficients of SOA from Isothermal Evaporation in a Laboratory Chamber

Xiaoxi Liu et al.

Summary: Nonideal molecular interactions in aerosol particles affect the distribution of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). This study quantifies the activity coefficients (gamma) of individual organic compounds in different atmospheric mixtures by measuring the isothermal evaporation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formed in an environmental chamber. The results show that the gamma of bulk SOA in complex atmospheric mixtures can be influenced by varying polarities of organic seeds and SOA.

Humidity-Dependent Viscosity of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Ozonolysis of β-Caryophyllene: Measurements, Predictions, and Implications

Adrian M. Maclean et al.

Summary: This study measured the viscosity of SOA generated from the ozonolysis of beta-caryophyllene as a function of relative humidity, showing significant differences in mixing timescales at different RH. Chemical composition of the SOA was determined using nano-desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and predicted viscosities overlapped with measured viscosities. The findings suggest that beta-caryophyllene SOA particles should be well-mixed under most conditions in the lower atmosphere.

Uptake of Water-soluble Gas-phase Oxidation Products Drives Organic Particulate Pollution in Beijing

Georgios I. Gkatzelis et al.

Summary: Despite the recent decrease in pollution events in Chinese urban areas, the World Health Organization air quality guideline values are still exceeded. Observations show a stronger decrease of organic aerosol directly emitted to the atmosphere relative to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) generated from oxidation processes. The uptake of water-soluble gas-phase oxidation products is reported as a major SOA contribution to particulate pollution in Beijing, triggered by the increase of aerosol liquid water. In pollution episodes, this pathway can explain the increase in SOA mass, with specific substances contributing 15%-25% of the increase. Future mitigation strategies should focus on reducing non-methane volatile organic compound emissions to reduce organic particulate pollution in China.

Coexistence of three liquid phases in individual atmospheric aerosol particles

Yuanzhou Huang et al.

Summary: Individual atmospheric particles can contain mixtures of primary organic aerosol (POA), secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), with the potential to have three distinct liquid phases. The presence of these phases is influenced by the elemental oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratio of the SOA, impacting equilibration timescales and potential effects on cloud formation and atmospheric chemistry.
