COVID-19 vaccines and risks of hematological abnormalities: Nested case-control and self-controlled case series study

Chor-Wing Sing et al.

Summary: Studies found no increased risk of hematological abnormalities after CoronaVac vaccination, but an increased risk of leukopenia was observed shortly after the second dose of BNT162b2. However, the incidence was much lower than following SARS-CoV-2 infections. The benefits of COVID-19 vaccination still outweigh the risk of hematological abnormalities.

Carditis After COVID-19 Vaccination With a Messenger RNA Vaccine and an Inactivated Virus Vaccine A Case-Control Study

Francisco Tsz Tsun Lai et al.

Summary: This study found a higher association between BNT162b2 vaccination and carditis, while no similar association was found for CoronaVac. The risk of carditis after BNT162b2 vaccination was mainly observed after the second dose. This increased risk should be weighed against the benefits of vaccination.

Epidemiology of Acute Myocarditis/Pericarditis in Hong Kong Adolescents Following Comirnaty Vaccination

Gilbert T. Chua et al.

Summary: There is a significant increase in the risk of acute myocarditis/pericarditis following Comirnaty vaccination among Chinese male adolescents, especially after the second dose. It is recommended for Hong Kong adolescents to receive only one dose of the Comirnaty vaccine.

Myocarditis Cases Reported After mRNA-Based COVID-19 Vaccination in the US From December 2020 to August 2021

Matthew E. Oster et al.

Summary: Based on reports in the US, the risk of myocarditis after receiving mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines was increased, especially among adolescent males and young men, particularly after the second dose. This risk should be considered in the context of the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination.

Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

A modified self-controlled case series method for event-dependent exposures and high event-related mortality, with application to COVID-19 vaccine safety

Yonas Ghebremichael-Weldeselassie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a modified self-controlled case series (SCCS) method to study the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. By using case studies and simulations, the authors investigate the biases that may arise from event-dependence and high event-related mortality, and present a new testing method.

Summary: This study, using electronic health records from Hong Kong, found that adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination are rare for all groups, and there is no evidence of risk modification due to multimorbidity.

Bell's palsy following vaccination with mRNA (BNT162b2) and inactivated (CoronaVac) SARS-CoV-2 vaccines: a case series and nested case-control study

Eric Yuk Fai Wan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk of Bell's palsy after vaccination with BNT162b2 and CoronaVac, finding an increased risk of Bell's palsy following CoronaVac vaccination. However, the overall benefits and protective effects of the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine far outweigh the risk of this generally self-limiting adverse event.

COVID-19 vaccination in patients with heart failure: a position paper of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology

Giuseppe Rosano et al.

Summary: Patients with heart failure who contract SARS-CoV-2 infection are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality. COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all patients with HF, including those who are immunocompromised or frail. After vaccination, patients should continue precautionary measures such as wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing.

Myocarditis With COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines

Biykem Bozkurt et al.

Summary: Myocarditis is a rare complication of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, predominantly affecting young adult and adolescent males, with most patients showing improvement in symptoms. Possible mechanisms include molecular mimicry between viral proteins and self-antigens, dysregulated immune pathways, immune response to mRNA, and dysregulated cytokine expression.

Summary: This study found that adults with a history of heart failure had a higher risk of in-hospital mortality during COVID-19 infection, especially those with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction. Therefore, this population should be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination.

Nawal Al Kaabi et al.

Summary: This interim analysis of an ongoing randomized trial in the UAE and Bahrain evaluated the efficacy of two inactivated COVID-19 vaccines in preventing symptomatic cases and adverse events in healthy adults. The study found that both vaccines significantly reduced the risk of symptomatic COVID-19 compared to the control group, with efficacy rates of 72.8% and 78.1%. Summary: This study described 7 patients with acute myocarditis, 4 of whom had received mRNA COVID-19 vaccination.
