OpenET: Filling a Critical Data Gap in Water Management for the Western United States

Forrest S. Melton et al.

Summary: The lack of consistent, accurate information on evapotranspiration and consumptive use of water by irrigated agriculture is a key issue in water management in the western United States and other arid agricultural regions. Recent advances in remote sensing of ET have led to the development of various mapping methods, with the OpenET project aiming to develop a system for generating and distributing ET data.

Diagnosing changes in glacier hydrology from physical principles using a hydrological model with snow redistribution, sublimation, firnification and energy balance ablation algorithms

Dhiraj Pradhananga et al.

Summary: This article introduces a comprehensive glacier hydrology model developed within the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform, which was applied to simulate the hydrology of glacier research basins in the Canadian Rockies. The model was successfully tested against observed data and found to accurately simulate various processes related to glacier hydrology. It also revealed that increased glacier ice melt contributions are the main reason for the increased discharge.

A computationally efficient hydrologic modeling framework to simulate surface-subsurface hydrological processes at the hillslope scale

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: Considering the interaction between surface and subsurface is crucial for predicting water movement and quality in the environment. In this study, a new efficient coupling routine for 1D surface-subsurface modeling was developed by combining KINEROS2 (K2) and HYDRUS-1D (H1D) open-source codes. The approach successfully accounted for surface ponding and water exchange between the two model domains, allowing for accurate representation of subsurface behavior below each overland flow plane.

Intercomparison of Sentinel-2 and modelled snow cover maps in a high-elevation Alpine catchment

Florentin Hofmeister et al.

Summary: This study utilizes Sentinel-2 MSI images to generate high-resolution snow cover maps in a high-elevation Alpine catchment. The data are analyzed to understand the spatiotemporal distribution of snow cover, and the quality of snow and cloud detection is evaluated against in-situ observations and other products. The generated snow cover maps are further used to calibrate a snow model, which successfully simulates snow cover duration and fractional snow-covered area, as well as the variability due to surface energy balance dynamics, wind, and gravitational redistribution.

Dynamical downscaling of global reanalysis data for high-resolution spatial modeling of snow accumulation/melting at the central/southern Sierra Nevada watersheds

Yoshihiko Iseri et al.

Summary: Data scarcity is a major constraint for hydrological modeling in mountainous regions, but in this study, the WRF model was utilized to produce high-resolution atmospheric data for snow modeling in central/southern Sierra Nevada. The configured WRF model showed satisfactory performance and was validated with PRISM data. The dynamical downscaling of CFSR data was used for snow model calibration and validation, showing good agreement with observed values.
