Constrained Density Functional Theory: A Potential-Based Self-Consistency Approach

Xavier Gonze et al.

Summary: In this work, a potential-based formulation of constrained density functional theory (cDFT) is proposed to treat chemical reactions, charge transfer reactions, and magnetic materials. The formulation allows for the equal treatment of constraints, atomic positions, and lattice parameters, making it a versatile tool for modeling low-lying excitations. The authors demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by testing it on spin and charge constraints and providing expressions for derivatives with respect to constraints. This formalism provides a foundation for generating model Hamiltonians and machine-learning potentials, as well as computing second or third derivatives of energy.
