Biochar alleviates metal toxicity and improves microbial community functions in a soil co-contaminated with cadmium and lead

Nahid Azadi et al.

Summary: The application of biochar in soils contaminated with heavy metals can alleviate the toxic effects on microbial functions by decreasing metal availability and increasing organic carbon content. Biochar also enhances microbial activity and enzymatic activity in co-polluted soils, largely through the promotion of labile carbon for microbial assimilation and metal immobilization. The improvement of soil microbial quality by low-temperature biochar is more effective than high-temperature biochar in mitigating the combined effects of metal stresses in polluted soils.
