Correcting the bias of daily satellite precipitation estimates in tropical regions using deep neural network

Xiaoying Yang et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a bidirectional long short-term memory recurrent network (Bi-LSTM) framework for the bias correction of satellite precipitation products (SPPs) in tropical regions. After optimization and statistical comparison, Bi-LSTM with the covariates of daily maximum and minimum temperature (Bi-LSTM-T) was determined to be the best model for bias correction. Bi-LSTM-T significantly outperformed two benchmark methods, ratio bias correction (RBC) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching, in correcting the bias of SPPs in tropical regions.

Bias correction method of high-resolution satellite-based precipitation product for Peninsular Malaysia

Zafar Iqbal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of six satellite-based precipitation (SBP) methods in replicating observed rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia and proposed a machine learning method to correct the bias in rainfall estimation. The study found that IMERG showed the best performance among all products, and random forest was the most suitable machine learning algorithm for classification and regression. The bias-corrected IMERG could reliably simulate observed rainfall and replicate the spatial distribution of heavy rainfall events.

RainPredRNN: A New Approach for Precipitation Nowcasting with Weather Radar Echo Images Based on Deep Learning

Do Ngoc Tuyen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach for precipitation nowcasting using a combination of the UNet segmentation model and the PredRNN_v2 deep learning model. The proposed model significantly reduces the number of calculated operations and processing time, while maintaining reasonable errors in the predicted images.

Broad-UNet: Multi-scale feature learning for nowcasting tasks

Jesus Garcia Fernandez et al.

Summary: In this study, weather nowcasting is approached as an image-to-image translation problem, with a novel architecture called Broad-UNet introduced to efficiently address the issue. By incorporating asymmetric parallel convolutions and the ASPP module, the Broad-UNet model is able to learn more complex patterns and achieve more accurate predictions with fewer parameters compared to other architectures. Results demonstrate that the Broad-UNet model outperforms other examined architectures in terms of accurate nowcasting for precipitation maps and cloud cover.

Application of Random Forest Algorithm for Merging Multiple Satellite Precipitation Products across South Korea

Giang V. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study utilized a Random Forest (RF) machine-learning algorithm to merge multiple satellite precipitation products, producing new grid-based daily precipitation data for South Korea. The results indicate that the RF model is more effective than statistical merging methods, especially in areas with sparse data.

Comparison of Deep Learning Techniques for River Streamflow Forecasting

Xuan-Hien Le et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of DL models in streamflow forecasting by comparing six supervised learning models. The findings suggest that LSTM-based models outperformed FFNN and CNN models in terms of both performance and stability. However, the more complex StackedLSTM and BiLSTM models did not show improvements in performance. For streamflow forecasting, simple architecture LSTM and GRU models are sufficient for producing reliable forecasts while minimizing computation time.
