Seed priming: an emerging tool towards sustainable agriculture

Subhabrata Paul et al.

Summary: Seed germination is a crucial physiological process in the plant lifecycle, with priming emerging as a potent tool to address various stress factors and achieve significant growth, yield, disease resistance, and stress tolerance improvements. Priming induces subcellular and proteomic changes in seeds, enhancing seed vigor for better growth and performance.

Summary: This study investigates the genotypic diversity and trait correlations of twelve tomato genotypes regarding photosynthetic pigments, macronutrient uptake, and fruit quality. '218 F1', 'Fokker F1', and 'Siberian' genotypes exhibit the highest values for tomato fruit quality traits. Additionally, RAPD analysis identifies potential candidate markers associated with studied biochemical traits.

Life Cycle Assessment of the Cultivation Processes for the Main Vegetable Crops in Southern Egypt

Mostafa Abdelkader et al.

Summary: Due to concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, the study of energy consumption is an intriguing and important subject. This study investigated the energy footprints, greenhouse gas emissions, and life cycle assessment of main vegetable crops cultivated in southern Egypt. The results showed that potato production required the highest energy amount, while onion and tomato had lower energy requirements. Potato production also had the least greenhouse gas emissions. Machinery and diesel fuel had the highest impact on all the studied environmental categories.

Investigation the activities of photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes and inducing genotoxicity of cucumber seedling exposed to copper oxides nanoparticles stress

Mostafa Abdelkader et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of cuprous and cupric nanoparticles on the early growth stages of cucumber plants. It found that foliar application of these nanoparticles decreases seedling height, root length, leaf area, and relative water content. The nanoparticles also affect chlorophyll and carotene content, electrolyte leakage, and iron and copper levels in the leaves. Additionally, they inhibit certain enzyme activities while promoting others. CuO nanoparticles show more severe effects on cucumber seedlings compared to Cu2O nanoparticles.

Effect of Biostimulant Application on Plant Growth, Chlorophylls and Hydrophilic Antioxidant Activity of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) Grown under Saline Stress

Christophe El-Nakhel et al.

Summary: Salinity problems in irrigated agricultural lands can be mitigated by the application of eco-friendly approaches such as protein hydrolysates. A greenhouse experiment on spinach showed that foliar application of a protein hydrolysate from vegetal origin helped mitigate the adverse effects of saline stress, increasing chlorophyll content and yield. The results provide valuable insights into the effects of protein hydrolysate application on leafy vegetables, aiding growers in maintaining high crop yield and quality under saline conditions without access to alternative irrigation water sources.

Jania adhaerens Primes Tomato Seed against Soil-Borne Pathogens

Hillary Righini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that seed priming with Jania adhaerens water-soluble polysaccharides (JA WSPs) can protect tomato plants from soil-borne pathogens and promote plant growth. Results showed that WSPs increased seedling emergence, reduced disease severity, and enhanced plant development.

Seed priming with proline improved photosystem II efficiency and growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Sarah Ambreen et al.

Summary: Seed priming with proline significantly improved the growth of wheat varieties, dependent on the type of variety and concentration of proline applied. Proline treatment significantly altered PSII activity in wheat varieties, but its translation into growth improvement depended on the potential of processing absorbed light energy by electron acceptors at the end of the electron transport chain, particularly those at PSI.

Seed Priming With Protein Hydrolysates Improves Arabidopsis Growth and Stress Tolerance to Abiotic Stresses

Mirella Sorrentino et al.

Summary: The study utilized a high-throughput screening method using simple RGB imaging and untargeted metabolomics to understand the mechanism of action of protein hydrolysates in Arabidopsis plants grown under optimal and salt-stress conditions. By using a Plant Biostimulant Characterization (PBC) index, two protein hydrolysates were identified as effective growth regulators and stress alleviators. The untargeted metabolomics approach revealed that these best performing biostimulants reduced stress-related molecules in the plants, alleviating the growth inhibition caused by salt stress.
