Preliminary Assessment of the Seismic Vulnerability of Three Inclined Bell-towers in Ferrara, Italy

Rafael Shehu

Summary: This study analyzes the seismic response of three inclined historical masonry towers in Ferrara, Italy, and evaluates their conservation state, vulnerabilities, and need for strengthening interventions. By simulating earthquakes of different return periods, the study finds that these towers have a relatively high seismic risk and exhibit unsymmetrical failure mechanisms and structural damage propagation.

Effects of vertical ground motions on the dynamic response of URM structures: Comparative shake-table tests

Stylianos Kallioras et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of vertical ground motion on the seismic performance of unreinforced brick-masonry buildings through shake-table tests. The results showed that vertical earthquake motion did not cause significant differences in the behavior of the buildings, with marginal and non-systematic impacts on the strength and peak response of structural/nonstructural walls. The experiments provided valuable insights into the effects of vertical acceleration on masonry structures.

Impact of Openings on the In-Plane Strength of Confined and Unconfined Masonry Walls: A Sustainable Numerical Study

Ubaid Ahmad Mughal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of opening percentage on the in-plane stiffness and lateral strength of masonry wall panels. The results reveal that the confined masonry approach provides a more reliable anti-seismic response and improved in-plane strength. The failure type of unconfined masonry walls changes as the opening percentage increases. Therefore, it is recommended to use confined masonry in highly seismic-prone areas to prevent catastrophic damage caused by earthquakes.

Vasiliki Pachta

Summary: Historic schools built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century in Greece were influenced by wider socio-economic changes. These schools were constructed following specific principles to meet functional and structural safety requirements. Although most of these buildings are currently used as elementary schools and well preserved, further assessment is needed to document and identify them as heritage structures.
