An open label phase II study of safety and clinical activity of naltrexone for treatment of hormone refractory metastatic breast cancer

Jayanthi Vijayakumar et al.

Summary: The clinical activity of naltrexone in patients with ER-positive metastatic breast cancer was evaluated. The results showed that naltrexone exhibited modest activity in stabilizing or reducing tumor SUVmax values in this short study. However, further development of the drug in hormone refractory breast cancer is not supported.

Intraoperative lidocaine infusion in patients undergoing pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer: a mechanistic, multicentre randomised clinical trial

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Intraoperative infusion of lidocaine did not improve overall or disease-free survival in patients undergoing pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer. However, it reduced the use of intraoperative opioids and circulating NETs formation after surgery, but had no effect on tumor-associated NETs.

Volatile anaesthesia and peri-operative outcomes related to cancer: a feasibility and pilot study for a large randomised control trial

J. A. Dubowitz et al.

Summary: The study explored the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial to investigate the impact of total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol versus inhalational volatile anaesthesia on postoperative outcomes for cancer patients. The successful recruitment rate and adherence to assigned anaesthetic treatment were high, and intra-operative and postoperative complications were comparable between the two intervention groups. This feasibility and pilot study supports the viability of a future large, randomised controlled trial to investigate the effect of anaesthesia technique on postoperative cancer outcomes.

Lidocaine inhibits the metastatic potential of ovarian cancer by blocking NaV1.5-mediated EMT and FAK/Paxillin signaling pathway

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: Lidocaine inhibits the malignancy of ovarian cancer by blocking Na(V)1.5 and enhances the chemotherapeutic efficiency of cisplatin. Downregulation of Na(V)1.5 can inhibit the malignant properties of ovarian cancer cells through inactivating FAK/Paxillin signaling pathway. The translational value of lidocaine as an adjuvant treatment for ovarian cancer warrants further investigation.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Epidural Anesthesia-Analgesia and Recurrencefree Survival after Lung Cancer Surgery: A Randomized Trial

Zhen-Zhen Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that combining epidural anesthesia with general anesthesia did not improve recurrence-free, overall, or cancer-specific survival after lung cancer surgery compared to general anesthesia alone. The results showed similar outcomes between the two groups, with no significant differences in survival rates. Additionally, patients receiving combined epidural-general anesthesia had a higher incidence of intraoperative hypotension.
