A reprogrammable mechanical metamaterial with stable memory

Tian Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a design for a tileable mechanical metamaterial with stable memory at the unit-cell level, allowing each binary element to be independently and reversibly switched between two stable states using magnetic actuation. This on-demand reprogrammability of mechanical properties enables a range of stiffness and strength adjustments, potentially leading to advanced forms of mechanical metamaterials.

Mechanical computing

Hiromi Yasuda et al.

Summary: Mechanical mechanisms have a long history in information processing, but recent unconventional computing approaches have introduced the possibility of new mechanical computing systems that interact with and adapt to their environment. This presents both challenges and opportunities in exploring mechanical systems as a complement to traditional electronic computing.

A mechanical metamaterial with reprogrammable logical functions

Tie Mei et al.

Summary: The reprogrammable mechanological metamaterial (ReMM) proposed in this study achieves logical computing through sequential excitations, allowing for selective imposition and release of excitations during initialization and reprogramming. Experimental results demonstrate the realization of universal combinatorial logic and sequential logic, while also discussing the fabrication scalability of the system.
