Valorization of lignins from energy crops and agro-industrial byproducts as antioxidant and antibacterial materials

Mariavittoria Verrillo et al.

Summary: The study found that lignosulfonates exhibited the strongest antiradical/antimicrobial capacity, while other substrates were less effective. The observed antioxidant/antibacterial properties were positively correlated with lignin aromatic/phenolic content. The positive correlation between antiradical and antimicrobial activities suggests that lignin scavenging capacity was also involved in its antibacterial activity.

Estimation of the Local Concentration of the Markedly Dense Hydroxyl Radical Generation Induced by X-rays in Water

Ken-ichiro Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The linear density of X-ray-induced dense hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) in water was estimated using EPR spin-trapping measurement. The yield of DMPO-OH in different concentrations of DMPO water solutions and the total spin-adduct of DMPO in neat DMPO liquid were quantified. The linear density of center dot OH generation in water by X-ray irradiation was estimated based on the inflection point on the plot of DMPO-OH yield versus DMPO linear density.

Antiflammatory activity and potential dermatological applications of characterized humic acids from a lignite and a green compost

Mariavittoria Verrillo et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with skin inflammation. This study aims to develop new products with anti-inflammatory properties from natural sources. Two different humic acids (HA) were isolated and evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity on HaCaT cells. The results show that humic acids have a protective effect on cells, and HA-LIG exhibits greater anti-inflammatory power than HA-CYN, suggesting their potential application in dermatology as skin protectors and anti-inflammatory agents.
