Wood-Derived High-Mass-Loading MnO2 Composite Carbon Electrode Enabling High Energy Density and High-Rate Supercapacitor

Lian Chen et al.

Summary: This study reports the high-mass-loading of manganese oxide (MnO2) electrode with wood-derived carbon (WC) as the current collector for high-energy-density devices. The WC@MnO2-20 electrode showed remarkable high-rate performance and high capacitance retention. The obtained symmetric supercapacitor exhibited high areal/specific capacitance and high energy densities, with good cyclic stability. This research provides a feasible strategy for the design of high-energy-density supercapacitors.

When MOFs meet wood: From opportunities toward applications

Xiaofan Ma et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread attention due to their structural diversity and multifunctionality, but their further practical applications are limited by their powdered crystalline state. However, compounding MOFs with self-supporting porous materials with good processibility can effectively stabilize the powdered MOFs. Wood, with its natural multidimensional channel structure and excellent mechanical stability, is highly compatible with MOFs. MOF particles can be uniformly loaded onto the wood channel through physical adsorption, hydrogen bonding, or reaction with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the fibers. Ultimately, synthesis of MOF@wood composites with new functions shows great potential in interdisciplinary research.

Nitrogen doped vertical graphene as metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Yahao Li et al.

Summary: The study introduces a strategy to synthesize nitrogen doped vertical graphene (N-VG) array for catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic electrolyte, demonstrating enhanced HER performance due to the introduction of N heteroatom leading to increased surface area and optimized electronic structure. Additionally, two possible enhancement mechanisms of N-VG are revealed with first-principle calculations, confirming the effectiveness of N doping in improving HER performance.

A durable and pH-universal self-standing MoC-Mo2C heterojunction electrode for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents a MoC-Mo2C catalytic electrode prepared using CO2, with excellent performance in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, showing low overpotentials, long-lasting lifetime, and high-temperature performance. The self-standing hydrophilic porous surface, intrinsic mechanical strength, and self-grown MoC-Mo2C heterojunctions contribute to its outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Further, scalable fabrication of various carbide electrodes with rationally designed structures, tunable compositions, and favorable properties is demonstrated, highlighting the importance of efficient low-cost catalysts for water electrolyzers operating at industrial conditions.
