Albedo susceptibility of northeastern Pacific stratocumulus: the role of covarying meteorological conditions

Jianhao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the sensitivity of marine low clouds to aerosol perturbations using satellite observations. The results show that cloud state plays a dominant role in determining cloud albedo susceptibility, while meteorological factors have a smaller impact. The study also identifies clear brightening and darkening regimes based on cloud liquid water path and cloud droplet number concentration, consistent with previous research on aerosol-cloud interactions.

Opportunistic experiments to constrain aerosol effective radiative forcing

Summary: Aerosol-cloud interactions are the most uncertain driver of radiative forcing due to human activities. Opportunistic experiments provide a way to investigate these interactions and improve assessments of aerosol radiative forcing and climate change.

Aerosol-cloud-climate cooling overestimated by ship-track data

Franziska Glassmeier et al.

Summary: In frequently occurring nonprecipitating stratocumulus, cloud amount can decrease through aerosol-enhanced cloud-top mixing. However, ship exhaust only marginally reduces stratocumulus amount, and ship track studies cannot accurately estimate the radiative effect of nonprecipitating stratocumulus to aerosol. The offsetting warming effect of decreasing stratocumulus amount needs to be considered in order to better understand the cloud-mediated radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosol.

Simulating Observed Cloud Transitions in the Northeast Pacific during CSET

Peter N. Blossey et al.

Summary: The goal of this study is to challenge a large-eddy simulation model by using observations from the 2015 CSET field campaign to develop case studies useful to other modelers. The simulations broadly reproduce satellite and aircraft observations of cloud transitions, with different cases showing varying levels of accuracy. Weather conditions, aerosol concentrations, and model parameters have significant impacts on the cloud transition process.

Cloud Microphysical Implications for Marine Cloud Brightening: The Importance of the Seeded Particle Size Distribution

Fabian Hoffmann et al.

Summary: Marine cloud brightening is proposed as a method to counteract global warming by increasing cloud albedo and lifetime, but the choice of seeded particle size distribution is crucial to its success. Large particles may trigger precipitation, while small particles reduce cloud droplets and efficiency.

Assessing the potential efficacy of marine cloud brightening for cooling Earth using a simple heuristic model

Robert Wood

Summary: A simple heuristic model is described to evaluate the potential for increasing solar reflection by augmenting the aerosol population below marine low clouds. The model accounts for the impact of various point sources of particle sprayers and performs well against estimates from large eddy simulation studies. The model underestimates brightening in most realistic conditions but shows promise in assessing the effects of aerosol injections on cloud brightening.

Observing the timescales of aerosol-cloud interactions in snapshot satellite images

Edward Gryspeerdt et al.

Summary: The response of clouds to aerosol perturbations varies in time scales, with instantaneous effects and longer-term adjustments. Ship emissions of aerosols can affect cloud properties within a few hours, while cloud adjustments can continue for more than 10 hours. The temporal evolution and background cloud field are crucial in understanding the aerosol impact on clouds.
