Phase and intensity control of dissipative Kerr cavity solitons

Miro Erkintalo et al.

Summary: Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons are light pulses that can persist in coherently driven nonlinear optical resonators, playing a key role in generating coherent microresonator optical frequency combs. Recent studies have focused on the dynamics and applications of these solitons under inhomogeneous driving fields, exploring theoretical developments to analyze cavity soliton motion and conducting experiments in various resonator systems.

Soliton linear-wave scattering in a Kerr microresonator

Pierce C. Qureshi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the scattering of an externally injected probe wave from a dissipative cavity soliton in a Kerr microresonator, and demonstrates the potential of using this nonlinear interaction to expand the soliton frequency comb. The research shows that the detuning of the injected probe from a cavity resonance plays a key role in controlling the central frequency and spectral envelope of the comb.

Zero dispersion Kerr solitons in optical microresonators

Miles H. Anderson et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a new type of dissipative structure called "zero-dispersion solitons" which combine switching waves and dissipative solitons. These structures can exist in the regime where group velocity dispersion approaches zero and have stable solitary structures. They have the potential for generating wideband frequency comb spectra.

Reversible Self-Replication of Spatiotemporal Kerr Cavity Patterns

Salim B. Ivars et al.

Summary: A novel and robust phenomenon has been uncovered where spatiotemporal Kerr cavity patterns in cylindrical microresonators gradually self-replicate. These patterns, which are inherently synchronized multi-frequency combs, experience transitions among patterns with different numbers of rows under proper conditions. The self-replications result in stepwise additions or removals of individual combs along the cylinder's axis in a fully reversible and deterministic way.

Photonic chip-based resonant supercontinuum via pulse-driven Kerr microresonator solitons

Miles H. Anderson et al.

Summary: Supercontinuum generation and soliton microcomb formation are key techniques for coherent, ultrabroad optical frequency combs, but they differ in their efficiency and application in the microwave domain. Bridging the efficiency gap between the two approaches by driving a dispersion-engineered photonic-chip-based microresonator can achieve high-efficiency soliton microcomb generation and frequency conversion.

Summary: Experiments in a coherently driven nonlinear optical resonator demonstrate the formation of persisting domains of MI-driven spatiotemporal chaos surrounded by a stable quasi-plane-wave background. The localized domains of spatiotemporal chaos can be individually addressed and turned on and off at will, showing new fundamental dynamics at the interface of front dynamics and MI.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of dissipative optical solitons in a two-component Kerr resonator

Gang Xu et al.

Summary: Researchers observed spontaneous symmetry breaking of dissipative optical solitons in a nonlinear optical ring resonator, leading to the coexistence of distinct vectorial solitons with asymmetric polarization states. By perturbing the system, deterministic switching between the two symmetry-broken dissipative soliton states can be achieved. This work provides fundamental insights into multi-mode nonlinear optical resonators, dissipative structures, and spontaneous symmetry breaking in coherently driven Kerr resonators.

Observations of existence and instability dynamics of near-zero-dispersion temporal Kerr cavity solitons

Zongda Li et al.

Summary: Experimental studies of dissipative Kerr cavity solitons under near-zero-dispersion driving conditions reveal unique characteristics and dynamics, with higher-order dispersion terms playing a significant role in modifying their stability. The experiments confirm theoretical predictions of polychromatic dispersive radiation emission and an extended stability range due to higher-order dispersion, as well as a novel cross-over scenario where the influence of higher-order dispersion changes from stabilising to destabilising. Overall, the results are consistent with numerical simulations and theoretical predictions, showcasing the soliton dynamics in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes.
