Probing the thermal history during reionization using a seminumerical photon-conserving code script

Barun Maity et al.

Summary: This study presents a seminumerical code for computing the ionization and thermal state of the intergalactic medium during the epoch of reionization. The code, an extension to a previous version, accounts for inhomogeneous recombinations and physical consequences of photoheating during reionization. It is concluded that constraints can be put on the evolution of the thermal and ionization state of the IGM using available observations, accounting for variations in free parameters.

The correlation calibration of PAPER-64 data

Tamirat G. Gogo et al.

Summary: The study introduces the hybrid correlation calibration (CorrCal) scheme to bridge the gap between redundant and sky-based calibration by relaxing array redundancy and incorporating sky information. Applying CorrCal to data from the Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER) experiment showed a small improvement in foreground power spectra, suggesting reduced spectral structure in the data post-calibration.

A numerical study of 21-cm signal suppression and noise increase in direction-dependent calibration of LOFAR data

M. Mevius et al.

Summary: This article investigates the systematic effects in direction-dependent gain calibration in the LOFAR 21-cm EoR experiment. It shows that calibrating short baselines using longer baselines can avoid signal suppression but leads to excess variance. The study demonstrates that regularization algorithms can mitigate this excess variance.

Astrophysical information from the Rayleigh-Jeans Tail of the CMB

Raghunath Ghara et al.

Summary: One possible explanation for the recent measurements of a strong absorption signal around 80 MHz is the presence of an excess radio background. This excess could be caused by the decay of unstable particles into dark photons with a mixing angle with electromagnetism. The measurements are used to derive constraints on the properties of early galaxies and the parameters of the particle physics model. The results suggest a high star formation efficiency, suppression of star formation in certain halos, and specific ranges for the mass and lifetime of the decaying dark matter particles, dark photon mass, and mixing angle.

Calibration requirements for Epoch of Reionization 21-cm signal observations - II. Analytical estimation of the bias and variance with time-correlated residual gains

Jais Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper studies the impact of time-correlated residual gain errors on signal observations in the presence of strong foreground. It proposes a method to analytically estimate the bias and variance in the power spectrum, and validates its effectiveness using simulated observations. The results show that as the standard deviation of residual gain errors increases, the bias in the estimation becomes dominant. Optimal choice of the time for gain solution estimation minimizes the risk, and interferometers with higher baseline densities are preferred for these studies.

The bispectrum and 21-cm foregrounds during the Epoch of Reionization

Catherine A. Watkinson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that foreground effects can overwhelm the EoR structures in the 21-cm bispectrum, while applying specific filtering techniques may help reduce the impact of foregrounds. Additionally, instrumental effects should be carefully considered as they can significantly corrupt the bispectrum, necessitating a thorough understanding of the errors and biases associated with foreground removal before practical application in data analysis.

Interpreting LOFAR 21-cm signal upper limits at z ≈ 9.1 in the context of high-z galaxy and reionization observations

Bradley Greig et al.

Summary: By utilizing the latest upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum at z around 9.1 from LOFAR, the study explores regions of parameter space inconsistent with the data and connects them with existing observational constraints. Models exceeding the 21-cm signal limits are ruled out by other probes, demonstrating the potential of forward modeling tools like 21CMMC in constraining the astrophysics of galaxies at high redshifts.

The Epoch of Reionization 21-cm bispectrum: the impact of light-cone effects and detectability

Rajesh Mondal et al.

Summary: We studied the spherically averaged bispectrum of the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization and found that the light-cone effect becomes significant on scales less than or similar to 0.1 Mpc(-1), where cosmic variance errors dominate for most triangle shapes. Only for squeezed limit triangles does the impact of the light-cone effect exceed cosmic variance.

A unified calibration framework for 21 cm cosmology

Ruby Byrne et al.

Summary: Calibration precision is a limiting factor in 21 cm cosmology experiments, with sky-based and redundant calibration commonly used but having limitations in adapting to interference measurements. A new unified calibration framework based on Bayesian statistics is proposed in this study, which shows improved calibration performance in an intermediate regime between sky-based and redundant calibration. The framework supports novel calibration approaches for compact non-redundant arrays, incomplete sky models calibration, and constraining calibration solutions across frequency.

Redshifted 21-cm bispectrum - II. Impact of the spin temperature fluctuations and redshift space distortions on the signal from the Cosmic Dawn

Mohd Kamran et al.

Summary: In this study, the 21-cm signal bispectrum during the Cosmic Dawn is analyzed, revealing trends in magnitude and sign evolution with redshift that depend on the source model. Two consecutive sign reversals in the bispectrum are observed under certain circumstances, providing potential insights into the CD history. Additionally, the impact of spin temperature fluctuations and redshift space distortions on the bispectra are quantified for the first time, demonstrating significant effects on different stages of the CD.

Prospects of constraining reionization model parameters using Minkowski tensors and Betti numbers

Akanksha Kapahtia et al.

Summary: The study explores the possibility of constraining model parameters of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from 21cm brightness temperature maps. The results show that the average size and isotropy of structures in the field are important factors, and that noisy Tb maps need to be smoothed to recover the input model. The systematic behavior of the statistic as ionization progresses enables stringent constraints on the mean neutral hydrogen fraction, making these descriptors promising statistics for constraining EoR model parameters and the ionization history of the universe.

Constraining the state of the intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization using MWA 21-cm signal observations

Raghunath Ghara et al.

Summary: The MWA team obtained new upper limits on the power spectrum of the 21-cm signal at 6.5-8.7 redshifts and used Bayesian inference to constrain the ionization and thermal state of the IGM, revealing no constraints on IGM state above 7.8 redshift in the absence of an additional radio background. The results suggest that models with an IGM fraction of ionized regions below 0.6 and average gas temperature less than or equal to 10(3) h(-1) are disfavored, along with an exclusion of an additional radio background of at least 0.008% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz within the same credible interval limits.

Summary: In this study, the impact of differences in the primary beam response between antennas on redundantly calibrated interferometric visibilities was investigated. Signal loss due to decoherence effects may occur, but redundant calibration helps mitigate its impact.

Redshift-space distortions in simulations of the 21-cm signal from the cosmic dawn

Hannah E. Ross et al.

Summary: The study indicates that redshift-space distortions have a significant impact on the 21-cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn, increasing the detectability of the signal while also decreasing non-Gaussianity of fluctuations from inhomogeneous X-ray heating. Mock observations suggest that imaging the Cosmic Dawn may be possible through telescope observations, with redshift-space distortions dramatically boosting fluctuations from the inhomogeneous Ly alpha background.

First Multi-redshift Limits on Post-Epoch of Reionization 21 cm Signal from z=1.96-3.58 Using uGMRT

Summary: Measurement of fluctuations in diffuse Hi 21 cm background radiation from the post-reionization epoch (z <= 6) provides stringent upper limits on the spherically averaged 21 cm power spectra and constrains the product of the neutral Hi mass density and Hi bias to the underlying dark matter density field at different redshifts. These results are the first limits on the Hi 21 cm power spectra in the redshift range z = 1.96-3.58 and are essential for constraining models of galaxy formation and evolution.
