Lipase-catalyzed esterification in water enabled by nanomicelles. Applications to 1-pot multi-step sequences

Vani Singhania et al.

Summary: In an aqueous micellar medium, commercially available lipase catalyzes esterification with high selectivity in the absence of any co-factors, aided by only 2% designer surfactant TPGS-750-M. An unexpected finding shows that the simple additive PhCF3 can significantly expand the range of usable acid/alcohol combinations. This allows for multiple chemo- and bio-catalyzed 1-pot, multi-step reactions to be performed in water.

Entropy reduction from strong localization-an explanation for enhanced reaction rates of organic synthesis in aqueous micelles

Martin P. Andersson

Summary: The underlying mechanism for increased reaction rates in micellar catalysis-based organic synthesis is a reduced entropy barrier for the reaction. The localization of reactants and catalyst in the surfactant micelle leads to a decrease in entropy. The predicted reaction rates show that the entropy reduction results in a larger prefactor, leading to an increase in reaction rate.

Summary: A new method of C-S coupling based on nickel catalysis in water with micellar catalysis has been reported, showing high isolated yields under mild conditions. It offers potential for scalability and low residual metal content, making it applicable to pharmaceutical synthesis targets. The associated low E Factor also suggests it may be a more attractive option compared to current methods using unsustainable Pd catalyst loadings.

Strategies to Tackle the Waste Water from α-Tocopherol-Derived Surfactant Chemistry

Christoph Krell et al.

Summary: The study examined the implications of using surfactant TPGS-750-M in water as a micellar reaction medium on the treatment of water waste and sustainable disposal. By determining the properties of the surfactant, a waste water concept was established which focuses on the lipophilicity and ester group lability of the molecule. The findings suggest preferred ways for designing surfactant processes and managing their aqueous waste streams in a sustainable manner.

Heterogeneous Catalysis for Cross-Coupling Reactions: An Underutilized Powerful and Sustainable Tool in the Fine Chemical Industry?

Suhelen Vasquez-Cespedes et al.

Summary: Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are crucial in organic chemistry, and the fine chemical industry has been exploring ways to reduce the amounts of transition metals used, with heterogeneous catalysis showing potential benefits. Despite the advantages of heterogeneous catalysis, its utilization in the fine chemical industry has decreased due to perceived difficulties in understanding and reproducibility. However, with the development of new supported metal catalysts, first-row transition metal catalysis, and continuous flow technology, there are tools available to overcome these challenges and promote the use of heterogeneous catalysis for cross-coupling reactions.

Sofia Siciliano et al.

Summary: The synthesis of 2-substituted indoles from unprotected 2-alkynylanilines using Pd(OAc)(2) catalyst in 3% TPGS-750-M water was found to be sensitive to the heating mode and the MW delivery mode, with convectional heating often proving more effective than microwave dielectric heating. Additionally, a tandem Sonogashira-cyclisation reaction was successfully achieved in the nanomicellar water environment with Pd(OAc)(2)/Xphos.

Atroposelective synthesis of N-aryl peptoid atropisomers via a palladium(ii)-catalyzed asymmetric C-H alkynylation strategy

Yong-Jie Wu et al.

Summary: The study presents an efficient synthesis of various N-aryl peptoid atropisomers with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities using palladium-catalyzed asymmetric C-H alkynylation, with l-pyroglutamic acid as a chiral ligand. The exceptional compatibility with different peptoid oligomers makes this procedure valuable for peptoid modifications. Computational studies suggest that the amino acid ligand distortion controls the enantioselectivity in the Pd/l-pGlu-catalyzed C-H bond activation step.

Copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions: an overview

Fatemeh Mohajer et al.

Summary: The Sonogashira reaction is a key cross-coupling reaction in organic synthesis, forming a C-C bond between a vinyl or aryl halide and a terminal alkyne. While traditionally requiring copper and phosphines or amines as co-catalysts and bases, recent developments have enabled the reaction to proceed without these components. This advancement could promote the principles of green chemistry and enhance the economic feasibility of the reaction.
