Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Data Fusion for Urban Change Detection Using a Dual Stream U-Net

Sebastian Hafner et al.

Summary: This letter introduces an approach for monitoring urban sprawl using Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI data. The proposed method utilizes a dual stream concept and U-Net architecture to process and extract features from different data modalities, which are then combined at the decision stage. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in urban change detection.

CMGFNet: A deep cross-modal gated fusion network for building extraction from very high-resolution remote sensing images

Hamidreza Hosseinpour et al.

Summary: This research proposes a cross-modal gated fusion network (CMGFNet) for extracting building footprints from high-resolution remote sensing images and DSMs data. CMGFNet utilizes separate encoders to extract features from RGB and DSM data and employs cross-modal and multi-level feature fusion methods. Experimental results demonstrate that CMGFNet outperforms other state-of-the-art models, and extensive ablation study confirms the efficacy of all significant elements.

Comparative study of convolutional neural network (CNN) and support vector machine (SVM) for flood susceptibility mapping: a case study at Ras Gharib, Red Sea, Egypt

Ahmed M. Youssef et al.

Summary: Geohazard risk is high in Arab countries due to ineffective disaster preparedness measures, mismanagement, lack of public awareness, inadequate funding and lack of stakeholder support. In this study, flood susceptibility modelling was conducted in Egypt using machine learning technique (Support Vector Machine) and deep learning method (Convolutional Neural Networks). The results showed that deep learning technique (CNN) provided better prediction accuracy than machine learning technique (SVM).

Supervised Change Detection Using Prechange Optical-SAR and Postchange SAR Data

Sudipan Saha et al.

Summary: Change detection using satellite/aerial images is important for quantifying the impacts of natural and man-made disasters. This study proposes a novel approach that uses prechange optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, along with postchange SAR imagery, to detect changes despite the absence of postchange optical image. The proposed Siamese network effectively fuses multisensor information and achieves satisfactory results.

Exploring Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 diversity for flood inundation mapping using deep learning

Goutam Konapala et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the capability of Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 1 bands, as well as their combinations, in generating accurate flood inundation maps. Results show that combining S1 with elevation information improves flood mapping accuracy, while water extraction indices based on S2 bands outperform S1. Among all band combinations, HSV transformation of S2 bands provides the best performance due to its superior contrast distinguishing abilities.
