Organic photosensitizers for antimicrobial phototherapy

Van-Nghia Nguyen et al.

Summary: Microbial infectious diseases, especially those caused by new and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, pose a significant threat to global human health. Phototherapy, as an antibiotic-free treatment, shows promise in treating microbial infections due to its selectivity, non-invasiveness, minimal side effects, and broad antimicrobial activity. This tutorial review provides an overview of the concept and significance of phototherapy, as well as recent research progress in using organic photosensitizers for antimicrobial applications.

The fast-growing field of photo-driven theranostics based on aggregation-induced emission

Zhijun Zhang et al.

Summary: Photo-driven theranostics, which integrate diagnostic imaging and therapeutic interventions, rely on the diverse excited-state energy conversions of theranostic agents. The applications of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) in this field have been extensively studied due to their favorable biocompatibility, tunable photophysical properties, unique theranostic features, and multimodal capabilities. This review summarizes the significant achievements of photo-driven theranostics based on AIEgens and elaborates on their diverse theranostic modalities.

Effective Antibacterial Activity of Degradable Copper-Doped Phosphate-Based Glass Nanozymes

Yifan Liu et al.

Summary: Copper-containing antimicrobials are highly valuable in medical disinfectants due to their high antimicrobial efficacy. The Cu-PBG nanozyme exhibits excellent antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by generating a ROS storm and releasing copper ions. Being intrinsically degradable, Cu-PBG gradually degrades in vivo and releases copper ions, showing excellent biocompatibility and potential for clinical translation.

Naphthalimide-based multifunctional AIEgens: Selective, fast, and wash-free fluorescence tracking and identification of Gram-positive bacteria

Sayed Mir Sayed et al.

Summary: This study synthesized two naphthalimide-based bioprobes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic, showing high binding/imaging selectivity towards Gthorn bacteria over G(-) bacteria and fungi via a wash-free protocol. The AIEgens were able to visualize biofilms formed by Gthorn bacteria and rapidly track the bacteria in red blood cell suspensions. The selective binding of the AIEgens towards Gthorn bacteria was found to be contributed by electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction.

Fluorescence Imaging and Photodynamic Inactivation of Bacteria Based on Cationic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes with Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties

Po-Yu Ho et al.

Summary: This study synthesized three cationic and heteroleptic cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes with dual functions for bacteria imaging and photodynamic therapy. Substitution of phenylpyridine with phenylquinoline isomers enhances UV and visible-light absorbance as well as photoinduced ROS generation ability. Although Ir(1-pq)(2)bP and Ir(2-pq)(2)bP have similar structures and ROS generation ability, the former eradicates bacteria more effectively through photodynamic inactivation under white light.
