Oxidative Strong Metal-Support Interaction Induced by an Amorphous TiOx Seed Layer Boosts the Electrochemical Performance and High-Temperature Durability of Pt Nanocatalysts

Jongsu Seo et al.

Summary: In this study, the dispersion and durability of Pt nanocatalysts were significantly improved by introducing nanoscale amorphous TiOx. The ultrathin TiOx layer on the conductive electrode promoted the migration of TiOx to the Pt surface, creating a metal-oxide interface. This provided a new direction for the design of supported metal catalysts for high-temperature applications.

Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Activity and Cr Tolerance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathodes by a Multiphase Catalyst Coating

Yinghua Niu et al.

Summary: Intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) face challenges due to the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and cathode degradation. A highly efficient multiphase catalyst coating significantly enhances the ORR activity and durability. Experimental results show improved peak power density and increased durability against Cr and H2O. Both the BCFN phase and BaCO3 phase contribute to the improved performance of the LSCF cathode.

Probing surfaces and interfaces in complex oxide films via in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Suresh Thapa et al.

Summary: Emergent behavior at oxide interfaces has driven research in complex oxide films for the past 20 years. Advances in synthesis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have enabled the growth of interfaces with unique properties not found in bulk materials. The in situ integration of synthesis and spectroscopy has improved the growth process and accelerated scientific discovery, with techniques including determination of interfacial intermixing, valence band alignment, and interfacial charge transfer.

Updating the Notion that Poor Cathode Performance Typically Dominates Overall Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Response

Yubo Zhang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) using high performance nano-composite cathodes on commercial supports exhibit similar current-voltage behavior and even peak power density improvement compared to those using commercial cathodes. This suggests that state-of-the-art SOFC performance may be limited by cathode, anode, or ohmic losses within the cell.

Design and Characterization of ALD-Based Overcoats for Supported Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts

Erik Sarnello et al.

Summary: Supported metal nanoparticle (SMN) catalysts are crucial for catalytic applications, but catalyst deactivation is a serious issue that can be effectively inhibited by using atomic layer deposition (ALD). ALD can stabilize SMN catalysts and aid in characterizing the overcoating layer and the catalyst itself.
