A 30 m global map of elevation with forests and buildings removed

Laurence Hawker et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method that uses machine learning to remove buildings and forests from the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model, generating a more accurate global map of elevation. By training the algorithm with unique reference elevation data from 12 countries, the method significantly reduces vertical errors in built-up areas and forests. The resulting elevation map is more accurate than existing global elevation maps.

Comprehensive Evaluation of the ICESat-2 ATL08 Terrain Product

Xiangxi Tian et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of current spaceborne lidar ICESat-2 ATL08 product for global terrain height using 3DEP digital elevation model and survey marks in two counties in the USA. The study finds that the height errors from ATL08 product vary based on terrain slope, canopy coverage, and seasonal variations, with potential implications for worldwide users and future product improvements.

Representation of tree cover in global land cover products: Finland as a case study area

Titta Majasalmi et al.

Summary: Forest extent mapping is crucial for climate modeling and ecosystem monitoring. Different global land cover products use simple tree cover definitions to differentiate forests from non-forests. This study assessed tree cover representations of three global LC products in 2017, showing that tree cover accuracy varied between 42 and 75%, with large differences in spatial distributions of coniferous and deciduous species. The CCI LC product demonstrated the best spatial mapping of coniferous and deciduous tree covers compared to reference data from MS-NFI.

Bare-Earth DEM Generation in Urban Areas for Flood Inundation Simulation Using Global Digital Elevation Models

Yinxue Liu et al.

Summary: Accurate terrain representation is crucial for flood modeling. Current global elevation data sets contain building artifacts that cause vertical errors, but these errors can be reduced significantly using publicly available datasets, leading to improved simulated water levels.
